Description

Patented June 24, 11930 UNITED `STATES JAMES A. ATGHITY, OFKANSAS CITY, MISSOURI f MOP Application led June 25,r
My invention relates to mops and more particularly to mop heads for supporting a swab, the principal objects of the invention being to simplify the manufacture of a mop head, to form a ferrule and a head from a single piece of metal, to facilitate the assembly of a swab with a mop head and to provide for economical replacement of a swab in a mop head mounted on a permanent handle.
In accomplishing the objects of'my invention I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved mop head attached to a handle and swab supporting members separated therefrom.
F ig. 2 is a detailed perspective view of my device in assembled relation with a handle and a swab.
Fig. 9 is a vertical central section from O front to back of the position illustrated in Fig. 2.
Fig, 4L is a plan view of the ferrule and body member.
Referring in detail to the drawings: 1 designates the body portion of the device having wings 2 extending laterally in the same plane and barrel-like tubular sleeves 3 and 4 formed on the vertical edges of the wings. A errule or socket member 5 extends from the upper edge 6 of the body with its axis extending in the plane of the body and is connected therewith by an angularly extending shoulder or neck 7 The body comprises vpreferably a plate having a concave lower edge 8 and the barrels 3 and 4 project below said curved edge to form a recess 9`to receive a curved head portion 10 of a folded swab 11. A bar-like loop member 12 comprises a swab portion 13, on which the swab may be folded, and bar-like branches 14 having threaded ends 15 adapted for insertion in the barrels and for extension therethrough for engagement by wing nuts 16 to clamp the swab to the head.
The angularly extendingy neck terminates in the middle portion 17 or the ferrule 192s. semi No. 288,044.
member 5 which has arcuate wing portions i 18 and 19 extending forwardly over the neck to center the ri'erruleon the body.
The body andv ferrule are preferably formed from a single sheet of metal, the barrel members comprising rolled portions of the wings, the neck being` outbent from the upper .edge of the body, while the ferrule is formed by bending the wings 18 and 19 so that their edges are substantially engaged. A handle 20 may then be inserted in the socket, its advance being stopped by the shoulder 21 formed by the upbending of the ferrule portion of the head from the neck 7 and when the ferrule is fixed to the handle by afnail 22, the handle will be positioned on the axis of the swab.
In a mop constructed as described, the swab is easily detachedffrom the head and a replacement swab,'provided with the headengaging member, may be obtained at relatively small cost and ,installed with little effort in secure engagement with the head and handle. The original cost of the head and ferrule is markedly reduced by reason of the integral construction, and particularly so when the device is constructed from sheet metal What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A mop head comprising a body having sleeves on its vertical edges and a handle receiving socket extending from the upper edge of the body, a swab and a clamp having a swab supporting portion and branches engageable with said sleeves VJfor clamping the swab supporting portion to the lower edge of the body.
2. In a mop head, a body comprising a flat portion having an angularly extending shoulder on one edge and an arcuate opposite edge, a ferrule extending from the shoulder with its axis in the plane of the flat portion, sleeves formed on the vertical edges of the flat portion, a swab folded to form a curved head, and a swab retaining member having branches adapted for mounting in said sleeves for clamping the swab head to the arcuate. edge of the body.
3. In combination with a handle and a swab to form a curved head, a swab support comprising a head having a ferrule formed on its upper edge, a concave lower edge curved substantially conformably to the curve of the swab head, and sleeves formed on its vertical edges, and a swab retainer comprising a bar-like member having threaded arms insertable in said sleeves and wing nuts for mounting on the arms to lock the swab head in engagement with the concave lower edge of the body.
4. In combination with a handle and a swab, a plate having a concave lower edge,
a ferrule on its upper edge toV receive the handle and sleeves on its vertical edges, and
extendingbelow said concave edge to form a swab-receiving recess, and a swab retainer comprising -a kbar like member having vthreaded ends insertable in said sleeves and wing nuts for mcuntingon the bar ends to lock the swab in engagement with the plate.
5. In combination with a swab and a handle, a mop head comprisingra body having sleeves on its vertical edges projecting below the lower edge of the head to form a recess, a handle receiving socket having a body-engaged Wall offset from the body, and arcuate wings extending over the `body to' form a ferrule to receive a handle, a clamp having a swab engaging portion and branchesl insertable in said sleeves for clamping the swab tothe body, and means for securing the clamp to the body.
