Description

June 17, 1930. A. D. TURNER I 1,765,113
cccc P Patented June 17, 1930 STATE-S mans CLAMP Application filed December 3, 1928.
This invention relates to a clamp, especially designed for use in connection with construction work, and aims to provide novel means whereby uprights or cross bars of scaffolds, or
other building apparatus may be securely clamped together in the formation of portable supports or scafiolds.
An important object of the invention is to provide a clamp of this character embodying a wedge shaped member adapted to be forced between a movable end bar of the clamp, and an article being clamped by the device, so that the clamp may be positioned without the use of nails, screws, or other securing means.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in. the
29 details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a view illustrating bars of construction work secured together by means of a clamp constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view of the clamp ready to be positioned.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the
clamp embodies end members 5 and 6 respectively, the end member 6 being provided with teeth 7 to bite into the bars or bar to which the device is secured, to insure against the bars 9.
Serial No. 323,365.
in a manner as shown by Figure 3, where upon the bars to be connected are placed side by side as shown by Figure 1. The clamp is now positioned in such a way'as to grip the overlapping ends of the bars to be connected and the bar 5 is moved to a position between The wedge 12 is now driven into position behind the bar 5, with the result that the bars being connected, and which are indicated. by the reference character A, are forced into close engagement with each other and securely held in such a way that the use of nails and screws is unnecessary.
Should it be desired to release the clamp, the wedge may be struck from the pointed end moving the wedge in the opposite direction permitting the clamp to open.
I claim:
1. A clamp of the class described including an end bar, pairs of side bars pivotally connected with the end bar and arranged on opposite sides thereof, a pivoted end bar mounted between the pair of side bars at one side of the clamp, a pin for connecting the opposite pair of side bars at the free ends thereof, said pivoted end bar adapted to pass under the pin, and a wedge shaped member slidably mounted between the second menpair, latching means for latching the free end-of the last mentioned bar, and a Wedge contacting with the swinging bar and artioles being connected by the clamp to hold the swinging end member against movement.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature. n
AUBREY DELOS TURNER.
