Description

June 17, 1930. v. A. SCOFIELD NEEDLE THREADER Filed March 15, 1924 wearer VIRGIL A. SCOFIELD, OF COGHISE, ARIZONA NEEDLE THREAIDER Application filedMarch 15, 1924. Serial No. 699,474.
The present invention provides an article whereby to quickly thread a needle, said article attachable to the spool upon which the thread is Wound, thereby enabling the spool to perform the function of a handle for convenient and ready manipulation of the device when in active operation, and the spool also serving as a holder whereby the needle threader may be conveniently at hand and not liable to be misplaced or lost.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a needle threader embodying the invention, showing the same attached to a spool ofthread,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the threader, showing the needle in position to receive the thread,
Figure 3 is an end view of the device,
Figure 4 is a detail view showing more clearly the manner of attaching the threading element to the holder, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the threading element.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
' The article comprises essentially two parts, 40 a holder and a threading element, the holder preferably consisting of a sheet metal blank bent into the form substantially as shown. The threading element consists of a short length of extremely fine wire bent into the form of a loop and having the extremities of the folded portions attached to the holder, the parts adjacent the fold brought close together and flattened, as indicated at 1, and the part intermediate the ends spread, as in- 50 dicated at 2, whereby to provide ample space for the ready passage of a thread 3. By flattening the sides of the threading element at the folded end 1, provision is had for drawing the thread through the eye of a needle 4:.
The holder for the threading element coinprises a cylindrical portion 5 which is adapted to be inserted in the opening of a spool 6, upon which the thread is wound. The
cylindrical portion 5 has an edge portion 7 end 1 of the threading short distance beyond the element projects a flattened end 9 and terminates short of the outer end 8, whereby provision is had for properly positioning the needle when adjusting the latter to receive the threading element preliminary to pass 1 ing the same through the eye of the needle.
The intermediate portion away, as indicated at 10,
of the holder is cut so as to expose the intermediate spread or open portion 2 of the threading element, wherebythe thread 8 may be readily passed therethrough after the needle has been slipped upon the threading element, as indicated most clearly in Figure 2.
After the threading passed through the eye of element has been the needle, the latter is moved thereon to admit of the thread 3 being passed through the open portion 2, after which the needle is moved outwardly to clear the threading element, the latter serving to draw the thread through the eye of the needle, as will be readily What is claimed is: A needle threader ma a blank, said blank being appreciated.
de primarily from formed into a split cylindrical portion adapted to fit the bore of a spool, the device being cut away above the cylindrical portion and above the cut away portion having relatively tions, one of the flattened above the other to provid close flattened por-, portions extending e a guard, a thread If ing element consisting of a fine Wire in the form of a loop disposed between said flattened portions, a portion of said loop being disposed in said cut away portion, the loop being fastened to the upper edge of the cylindrical portion.
In testimony whereof I afiix m signature.
