Description

June 17,1930. w. F. SHELGREN VANITY CASE Filed May 15, 1929 gwuwwtoz Zgalier 1 57wre7 Patented June 17, 1930 our WALTER F. SHELGREN, OF BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA VANITY cnsn Application filed May 15,
tainer; and relates more particularly to a combined belt-fastener and finger tab by which the ends of the belt may be secured together and the belt may be easily moved or reciprocated.
The object of the present invention is the provision of a combined finger-piece and fastener of the type described which will be substantially of the same thickness as the material of the belt itself, thus occupying no additional space in the vanity case and not requiring greater depth for the case; and which is neat in appearanceand of such construction as permits of'quick assembly or 3 attachment to the belt and of economy in. manufacture. I
With the above and other objects in view,- the invention resides in sundry details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which show the preferred form of the invention as at present devised tener of the present invention; and
Fig; 1 illustrates a vanity case equipped with the combined finger piece and belt fas- Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substan-- tially on line 22 of Fig. 1 and illustrating the detailed construction of the combinedfastener and finger piece.
With particular reference to the drawings,
C denotes a vanity case having a'cover or top T'and compartments for carrying pow-L dered talcum and rouge. .Endless belts B are associated with said compartments for delivering small quantities of the powdered contents of the compartments. These belts have one side extending into the compartments and another sideflying exteriorly thereof, so that when the belts are moved to bring the portion thereof lying within the compartment exteriorly of the compartment, a quantity of the contents of the compartment adhering to the belt is made accessible to the user of thevanity case, this powder 1929. Serial No, 363,339.
or rouge being taken from the exposed surface of the belt by apuftorapplicatorr If .further powder is desired, the belt is again shifted in opposite directions to repeat the operation." 7
It is desirable and practically necessary for a finger piece to be provided by which .the belt may be reciprocated. .Since these belts B are made from straight pieces of material, it is also necessary: to fasten the ends of thestripin order to render the strip in endless form. These two requirements .are
accomplished in the present instance by a clip 10 made, of sheet-metal." r.
The clipflO consists of a thin strip of.
sheet metal of a length substantially the width of the-belt. The side marginal edge portions of the strip are folded inwardly at 11 tol-ie flat against the body of'the strip,
and are then folded upon themselves as at 12 tofprovide two pair of gripping jaws 13 and 14 and a channel 15 betweenthe points of fold 12, ,each marginal portion forming opposing :jaws w and 3 opened along the outer side 'edges of the clip 10. To apply.
l the other end between the jaw 1-{l'.",'When. insertedfthe. jawsof each marginal portion are crimped down upon theicemented end of the belt, thus tightly securingtheendsof the belt to the cliplO.
The' channel 15 providedbetween the ginal j awsof the clip is of substantial? width and depth to receive the end ofthe finger, coin orother instrument by which'the belt may be reciprocated inthe manner above. described, the-inner ends 12 of the j aws forming abut-r.
ments against which the finger nail or coin may bear.
- The edges of the marginal portions may be folded inwardly as at 16, so that edgemay act as'a gripping surface on the inner-sides of the". jaws w of each'pair as well as to finish off the edge of the jaw. 3
Since the clip may be made of extremely thin metal, itis obvious that it will lie flat and not occupy any greater space than the;
thickness of the belt. It will also be obvious that the clip is a unitary article made from a single strip of metal and may be manufactured at a very low cost and be quickly assembled with the belt, making an extremely neat appearanceand having a two-fold function.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a vanity case having a powder con tainer, an endless powder conveyor movably arranged in the container and being capable of carrying powder from the container to a point where it may be removed from the con- ;v'eyorgsaid conveyor comprising a strip of v fiexible material and fastening'means securing the ends of the strip together, said fastening means being provided with a channel-like groove in its upper surface in which a finger or other instrument may be inserted for shift ing'th'ej belt.
- 2; In a vanity case having a powder con- "taine'r, an endlessbelt movably arranged in the containerfor delivering powder from the latter to a point where it may be removed from the belt, said belt comprising a strip of V fiexible material, and a clip formed of relatively stiif material to provide two pairs of clamping jaws, each pair adapted to receive between it an end of said belt, said clip being further formed to provide a channeled groove "between said jaws in which the finger or other instrument maybe inserted to shift the belt;
3; A vanity case having a powder container, an endless belt arranged in saidcon- I tainer for supplying'powder therefrom when the belt is shift'ed,said belt comprising a strip 1 of flexible material, a clip for securing the ends of said belt-together, said clip consisting of a strip of metal having its marginal side edges folded inwardly upon the body of the strip and said marginalfolded portions being "bent intermediately upon themselves to form gripping jaws on opposite sides of the clip and: opened along the side edges thereof for;
receiving the ends of said belt strip respectively, said jaws being pressed together to se cure the belt thereto, said gripping'jaws bei in which an instrument or finger may be in- 'serted for shifting thebelt; j In testimony whercoflhavehereunto set my hand g V i WALTER F.- SHELGREN.
