ATTACHMENT FOR SAWS .Filed July 8, 1929 2 sheets-sheet 2 ...fmmllll I George/HW ATTORNEY Patented June 17, 1930 UNITED STATES v GEORGE HABE, 0F ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA ATTACHMENT Fon sav-vs` f Application filed July S,
The present invention relates to butcher saws, and saws of like construction, and contemplates the provision of a novel construction of means whereby a quick and positive 5 tension of the blade can be eected. j
Amongst other features, the invention embodies a rotatable disk having a connection with one end ot the saw blade, together withV a novel construction of means for adjusting lo the disk to quickly and positively tension the blade as the occasion ,may require.
Other objects and advantages will appear when the followingV detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying l drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combinatio-n and arrangement of parts as claimed. j n
In the drawings forming Apart of .this ap- W plication like numerals ot' reference indicate W similar parts fin the several views, and
therein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a saw illustrating one embodiment of the invention.-
Figure 2 is a fragmentary end elevation. Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is a sectional viewV on line -i of Figure 1.
"- fied construction.
Figure 6 is a sectional view on line 66 of Figure 5. Y e
i Figure 7 is a fragmentary view oi a still j further modified torni of the invention.
Figure 8 is a sectional view on line 8-8 of Figure 7 i j `Referring to the drawings in detail, and
more particularly Figures l to 4 inclusive,
Q 10 indicates the blade of the saw which is w mountedin the trame 11 oi' ordinary well known construction. The handle is indicated at 12. One end of the traine 11 is biturcated as at 18 to receive the adjacent end oit the u 5 blade 10, and is also formed with opposed Figure 5 is a fragmentary view of a modi- 1929. seriailNQ. 376,803.`
crates in the bifurcated portion 17 of the other end of the traine 11V asfclearly illustrated in Figure 4. The disk is vgrooved as at 18 to receive the blade 10,' and is also formed with notches 19 to receive the cross 55 pin 2() carried by the Vadjacent end of the blade. The disk 16 is formed with a square central openingto yreceive the squaredfportion 21 of a supporting pin, which latter is also` formed ,with an 'annular portion'22 fitted in a similarly formed lopening provided in the traine 1l. Thepinis also provided with a reduced threaded extremity 23 which projectsthrough an opening in the frame 11,l and has associated therewith a nut 211or holding the parts operatively associated. The other end ofthe pin supports a head 25 having a'transverse bore 26 therethrough in wliichany suitable tool can be quickly inserted to rotate the diskas the occasion may require; vManifestly by turning'the disk in' the mai'iner stated, the blade 10fcan be quickly andV positively tensioned 'with a minimum' of effort. The disk is also-provided with aseries of teeth 27`with wliichfthe paw/.ls 28 cooperate toj prevent retrograde movement of the diskas will be readily understood. `f AIn Figures 'and I have illustrateda modified formof the invention, although the principle of operation is exactly the` same as S0 hereinabove described in connectionwith the preferred forni. In these views, the blade is indicated at 29 and is associated with the rotatable disk 30'in the same maiineiabove described.A In this formV ot the invention 8" however,`the disk 30 is mounted on an ordi?" nary pivot of any well known construction, in Vcontradistinotion`to the pin lhereinabove i described, while the disk is formed with a o socket 31 to accommodate a suitable tool for turning the disk for the purpose above p stated. The disk is also formed with'teeth 32 which are engaged by pawls 33 to prevent retrograde movement of the disk.
In Figures 7 and 8 I have illustrated another modified form of the invention, wherein the saine principle of operation is also carried into effect. However, in this form of the invention I contemplate the use of a hand ico actuated lever 34 for operating the disk, in contradistinction to the means hereinabove described for this purpose. In these views, the disk is indicated at 35 and is connected 5 With the saw blade 36 in the manner above set forth, the disk being formed With the usual teeth 37 to cooperate with the pawls 38 to prevent retrograde Imovement Aof the disk. The lever 34 is arranged inv close relation to the handler39 of the saw so that it can be gripped and conveniently operated .as -the occasion may require. Carried by the lever 34 is a pawl 40 which engages theteeth 37 'to l rotate the disk in one direction incident to the operation of the lever. Mounted upon the pivot for the disk 35 is a resilient 4Washer il Which is employed to exert a tension on Athe operating lever34. `It is manifest, that the invention in any of-theforms herein illustrated and described, is simple inconstruction, and both eificient and positive in opera tion for thepurpose intended.
VVhi'le it is believed that from the foregoing description the natureand advantages of the invention Will be readilyapparent, I desire to have it understood that I do vnot limit myself to what is herein illustrated .and described, and that such changes may befresorted to when desiredas fall Within the scope of What is claimed. Y
What I .claim is y l. A saw comprising a frame,.a blade detachably engaged with one endvthereof, a disk mounted for rotation :and .formed With V aperipheral groove .to receive `the other end of the blade, meansfor detachablyconnecting lthe lastmentioned end ofrthe'blade With said disk, means for partially rotating the disk to obtain a quick and positive tension `on y 40 the blade, and means for preventing retrograde 'movement of the disk, at ,different stages of the partial rotation thereof.
2. A saw comprising a fran-1e, a .blade .detachably engaged with one end thereof, a disk supported upon the frame 'for rotation and having detachable association with the otherend of the blade, a-socket formed on Y said disk, whereby the latter canbepartially rotated .to effect .a quick i and 5positive tension onthe blade, and means for `preventing retrograde movement of the disk, at different stages of the partial rotation thereof.
