IMPROVEMENT IN PRlNTlNG-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,487, dated April 25, 1876; application filed May 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDERICK A. ScHULE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Printing Presses, of which the following is a description sufi'iciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an isometrical perspective view of my improved printing-press.
My invention relates more especially to that class of presses which are used by hand, and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a cheaper and more effective device of this character is pro dueed than is now in common use.
In the drawing, A is the main frame B V,
the platen; U, the chase-frame; K, the chase;
T, the chase-holder; D, the ink-roller frame; F, the ink-table, which is supported on the standardE, and operated by the ratchet G H and swinging lever I. The roller-frame D is pivoted, at r, to the arms M, which project from the rear of the frame U, and is connected by the links L L to the frame A. The frame U is hinged to the frame A at d, and is provided with the shoe-shaped side pieces or guides on which the inkrollers J J pass to the table F. The platen B V is rendered adjustable by the bolts and nuts S, and there is also an adjustable stop, Q, against which the frame D strikes when the handle R is pressed down.
From the foregoing, the nature and opera tion of my invention will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters.
The handle R being raised to the highest point, the chase containing the type from which the impression is to be taken is secured upon the frame U by the clamp T, the paper or card being placed in an inclined position on the platen B V. If, now, the handle R is depressed, the frame D will move on the pivot r, and the ink-rollers J J be caused to pass across the face of the type and along the guides O to the table F. The frame D, being prevented from rotating on the pivot r by the links L L, will be drawn forward as the handle F is pushed down, and the type in the chase K pressed forcibly upon the paper on the platen B V, in a manner plainly obvious. When the handle is again raised the frame U will be swung back, the rollers J J passing from the table F over the shoes 0 and across the face of the type to ink it in the usual manner. The rollers J J are held and rendered adjustable by the ordinary boxes and springs a P N, and the common appliances for holding the paper upon the platen are employed. The lower end of the pendulous lever 1 has a cam-shaped edge which works in connection with the cross-bar of the frame D, to which the handle R is attached, to operate the ratchet G H, and move the table F intermittently, thus distributing the ink properly to the rollers.
No novelty is claimed for the platen B V, chase-frame U, chase K, or rollers J J, when in and of themselves considered. I am also aware that it is not new to use a circular inking-table moved by a ratchet mechanism, and therefore do not claim the same broadly, the distinguishing feature of my invention consisting in the ink-table F and its operative mechanism, and the roller-carrying frame D and handle R, all mounted on the oscillating type-carrying frame U, the frame D being connected by the links L L to the frame A, as shown, by which the whole mechanism is simplified. and rendered very compact, and so that the type may be inked and the impression given by merely operating the handle R vertically.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- The oscillating frame U U, carrying the chase, rollers J J, and ink-table F, in combination with the links L L and frames A, B, and D, all constructed, arranged, and operated as described.
FREDERICK A. SOHULE.
