WEATHERPROOF PUMP MOTOR Filed Sept. 15, 1926 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 TOR O 614;?4 .r/OH 50 ORA/EX Patented June 17, 1930 {UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICER CARI E. JOHNSON, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED STATES ELEC- TBICAL UFAGTURING COMPA TION OF CALIFORNIA NY, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORA- WEATHERPROOF PUMP MOTOR Application filed September 15, 1926. Serial No. 135,671.
This invention relates to electric motors and particularly to turbine irrigation pump head constructions. s In the past and at the present time itis ordinary practice to protect the pump head of a turbine irrigation pump by enclosing it in a small pump house. It is the tendency however to do away with the pump house in order to decrease expenses, this subjecting the pump head to the rain, sun and other elements. It is very important that the driving motor of the pump head be protected from .the elements, especially from rain and moisture which are capable of doing considerable damage to the windings of the motor.
It is an object of this invention to provide a pump head construction for turbine irrigation pumps in which the motor is adequately protected from the elements.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 44 of Fig.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken through a second form of the invention.
Referring to the drawings and particularly to Fig. 1, the numeral 11 represents a pump head which is mounted at the upper end of a well 12. Placed in the well 12 near the lower end thereof, below the water level,
It is quite essential that the motor have is a pump section 13. The pump section 13 is attached to the lower end of a discharge pipe 14 which extends upward through the well 12 to the surface of the ground where it is connected to the pump head 11. The pump head 11 consists of a body 16, to the interior of which the discharge pipe 14 is connected, and a drive means in the form of a motor 17. The motor 17 as shown in Fig. 1 is provided with a protective jacket 18cmbodying the features of the invention.
Referring to Figs. 2 to 4 inclusive, the details of the invention will be described. The motor 17 consists of a lower frame 20 which is supported by the body 16. Resting on a shell portion 21 of the lower frame 20 and secured thereto by bolts 22 is a stathe upper frame 25. Extending through the bearlng chambers 27 and 30 is a pump shaft 33 which extends from the pump head 11 to the pump section 13 in the well 12. Situated in an opening 34 of the stator 23 is a rotor 35. The rotor 35 is secured on a quill 36 which surrounds the shaft 33 as shown. The upper end of the quill 36 is attached to a thrust block 38 as shown so that the thrust block will be driven by the rotor 35 through the quill 36. 'The thrust block 38 is supported by the thrust bearing 31 and is drivably attached by a nut 39 to the shaft 33.
The walls 32 of the upper end of the frame 25 are closed by a cover member 40 which is secured in place by bolts42. The cover memsurrounding the motor 17 with the exception drical portion 45, this radial wall 46 being annular and extendin above the lower edge thereof.
. forme inward. The top frame 25 is provided with a shell portion 48 havin flat faces 49 where the bolts 26 extend theret rough, and on these flat faces 49 the jacket 18 is sup orted by ,en agement of the ower face of the radial wal 46 therewith. Extending upward from the inner edge of the radial wall 46 is an annular flange 50.
. The'upper end of the annular flange 50. ro-
jects inside the rim 43,- terminating1 slig tly' T e motor 17 is entirely protected from'thesun since the enclosure consisting of the rim 43 and the jacket 18 is complete. The motor 17 is protected from moisture and rain by reason of the fact that there are no upward directed openings through which moisture or rain may pass in order to enter the motor. There are however openings which provide a thorou h and efficient ventilation for the motor. eferring to Fig. 2, air may n enter the lower part of the'motor throu h openings 55' in the shell 21as in icated by the arrow 56,being circulated by a lower.fan
I 56. The air may circulate through the motor and pass from the interior thereof as indicated by'the arrows 57 Air is also drawn inward at the upper endof the .motor. by an upper fan 58, as indicated by arthrough openingsrows 59, the air passin 60 in the upper shell. T e air flows outward from the motor as indicated by arrows 61. The lower ,end of the cylindrical portion 45 of the jacket 18 is open so that air may move downward inside of it as indicated by the arrow 62. In Fig}. 5 I illustrate a form of my invention aving a secondary jacket 70. In this form of the invention the cylindrical wall 45 of the jacket 18 may beshortened as shown.
From the foregoing description the'advantages of the invention are obvious. The jacket 18 assisted by the rim 43 provides complete protection from the elements. parts are so constructed that a thorough ventilation may be established even though the motor is entirely protected from the elements.
cheaper. The cost of the jacket 18 and of providing the rim 43 on the cover 40 is considerably less than the cost of the usual pump house.
