My invention relates particularly to means for attaching a broom handle to a broom head, and especially when the handle is removable, and an object of my invention,

among others, is the provision of means whereby such handle may be rigidly and securely attached in position.

One form of a broom embodying my invention, and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top view of a broom embodying my invention, the outer portion of the handle being broken off.

Figure 2 is a front view of the structure. Figure 3 is an end view, and Figure 4 is a view in central crosswise section. In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 indicates a broomhead to the under side of which bristles 6 are secured in any suitable manner. It is common practice at the present time to construct this head of wood or similar material which is of suitable thickness, the handle 7 being removably secured to the head as by means of a screwthreaded, preferably tapered, end 8 fitting a hole similarly formed in the head. Frequently two holes are made in the head located at an angle to each other so that the handle may be attached for use on either side of the broom as may be desired.

It has been found in practice that the handle readily becomes loosened and, more# over, the screw-threaded tip is liable to be broken off or the broom head to be split, especially when the handle becomes loose so that some play is permitted in its socket in said head. To avoid these results` I have provided means to enable the handle to be very securely and rigidly attached to the head, such means comprising a brace formed ot comparatively heavy wire.

5 This brace is of substantially U-shape. comprising arms 9 oppositely arranged and joined at their upper ends by a yoke l0. This yoke is located at one side of the plane of the arms 9 and is curved to tit the handle 7, which is generally round in cross section.

The lmember just described and 'comprising the branching arms 9 is supported and secured in place by means of Va tie 13 with loops 14 at its opposite ends to receive the "65 arms, this tie extending over the handle in opposition to the yoke l0, said yoke and tie in fact constituting a hole, when the brace y is viewed fromv the end, through which the handle 7 extends. The loops 14 are closed 70 tightly around the branches 9, and said tie and yoke are formed to so tightly embrace the handle as to prevent any looseness between the handle and the brace as a whole, so that the handle is'very rigidly and firmly 7 held in position. This grip of the brace upon the handle, however, will not be such that the handle cannot lbe rotated when sufticient power is applied to it to rem-ove it from y the head, but this grip will preferably bc such that more power will be required to turn the handle than is commonly applied to it in the ordinary uses to which the broom is subjected.

While my improved brace has been shown Si herein as used with a handle screw-threadedly engaged with the broom head I do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention to such use, as it is equally applicable to other means for securing the handle, as for instance, one in which a smooth handle end is secured in an unthreaded hole.

In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have itunderstood that the device shown lisonly illustrative and that the invention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set out.

I claiml. In combination with a broom head and a handle having its end extended into a hole in said'head, a brace comprising branching arms connected by a yoke" at one end and removably engaged4 with said head at' their opposite ends, said yoke extending partially around said handle,l and a strand'of Wire forming a tie secured at its ends by loops n to said branches and passing around the Y opposite side of the handle from said yoke.

2. In combination With a broom head and a handle having its end eXtendedfinto a hole in said head, a brace comprising branching arms connected by a yoke at one end, lips at the opposite ends ofsaid arms engaging the under surface of the broom head and` forming a' groove to receive the corner of saidV head, said yoke extendingrpartially around said handle, and a strand of Wire forming a tie secured at itsends by loops tightly encircling said branches and passing around the opposite side of the handle from said yoke, said yoke and tie being formedV to tightly grip said handle.
