Description
June 17, 1930. w. SCHMIDT TRANSPORTING VESSEL Filed Aug. 248, 1929 l 1:' I T Patented June 17, 1930 UNITED STATES PATEN'Il OFFICE WILHELM SCHMIDT, OF PEINE, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM GEBR. KARGES, g OF BRUNSWICK, GERMANY TRANSPORTNG VESSEL Application led August 28, 1929, Serial No. 389,042, and in Germany J'anuarylS, 1927.
This invention relates to transporting vessels, such as are used in preserving factories and the like for transporting and temporarily storing vegetables, fruit and the like. According to the invention such, a vessel is so constructed that the material to be treated can also be boiled, cooled, washed, dyed and subjected to other operations, without the necessity of transferring it from one vessel to another bet-Ween two operative stages. This signifies a considerable saving in work, which is of importance for preserving factories having seasonal rush periods, and prevents damage to the material which is very ,s apt to suffer seriously through being transferred from one vessel to another. This also reduces the number of vessels used and the number of hands employed. The new vessel forms a freely movable pail or similar container capable of being inserted into any boilers, washing troughs, dyeing vats or the like and having a perforated bottom through which the boiling, washing or dyeing medium can enter, which, rising from below, passes through the contents of the vessel and can pass out again through perforations or the like at the top.
A further feature of the invention is a trough or the like, which is provided with means for sealing the new vesselin a Huid* tight manner and with connections for conveying a boiling, washing or dyeing medium through the vessel.
A constructional forni of the invention, which should be regarded as an example only, is shown diagraminatically in the accompanying drawing. Fig. 1 shows the new pail in perspective suspended from the hook 0f a crane. Fig. 2 shows in vertical section how the new pail is used for boiling, cooling and washing vegetables. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2.
In the example shown the new vessel consists of a sheet metal pail a having a perforated bottom b and perforations c near the which facilitates the placing-of the pail a over upper rim. The vegetables or the like are placed in the pail a. lf the vegetables are for instance to be boiled, cooled and washed, the new pail is placed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, into a trough-like container z' whichis divided by uprighttransverse walls l into compartments 2. The bottom Z of each compartment 2 has an opening a which is somewhat smaller than the perforated bottom Z2 of the pail a and under which is a chamber m which is closed at the bottom. This chamber is provided with a closable steam supply pipe 7c, a closable water supply pipe cl and a drain cock d. Over the hole a the pail a is placed, preferably so that its rim al rests on a sealing (rubber) ring o framing the hole a. `The result of this arrangement is that the medium (steam or water) which is admitted under pressure through the pipe c or cl into the chamber m is forced upwards through the pail, the contents of the pail being causedto float and being consequently thoroughly penetrated and loosened up. Thus, by alternately using the pipes 7s and 701, the material can be boiled, cooled and' washed (or, as is for instance usual in the case of spinach, be dyed and rinsed) in direct sequence in the same vessel a without being shifted or transferred, if the pipes 7c and 701 are connected up to the particular con. tainers. The medium (steam or liquid) penetrating the contents of the pail from the bottom upwards passes out through the upper openings c in the pail and pours into the chamber 2 of the trough which is providedat a suitable place with a drain pipe g.
The ring p for holding the sealing ring 0 `in position is preferably provided as shown in Fig. 2 with an upwardly flared flange p1 the opening n.
For the arrangement shown in Figs. 2
and 3 the existing washing troughsin preserving fact'ories'may be used, so that the new pail does notnecessitate the provision of any elaborate new arrangements. The employment of long troughs z', the top plate Z of which has several openings n, has the advantage that at the same time for instance in one Chamber m the steam pipe, in the next chamber the cooling pipe and in a third oompartment a cooling or dyeing pipe may be opened, so that by simply moving the pail a from one opening n to the next and so on, the material can without dihioulty be subjected to all the working stages. A trough or box z', however, the top plate Z of which has only one opening n for the pail, also forms a feature of the present invention.
It should be understood that the use of the new pail a, b is not limited to apparatus of the kind shown.
that I Claim is:
