This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mechanical toys adapted for both hand and power operation. The purpose of the invention is to provide a toy ofthe '5 above type including a humming fan wheel operatively suspended within a closed chamber containing light objects adapted to be blown about in an attractive manner.

Further to construct the toy so that it may be both manually and power operated, the

latter form of operation obviously being preferred for larger toys. The invention further includes an axially rotating or whirling disk supported on a pair of horizontally disposed cords normally spaced apart at the point of attachment of the disk and brought together at their points of suspension.

These and other objects which as will later become apparent are obtained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter to be described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure and in which Fig. 1 shows a plan view of the toy;

The invention comprises a box-like enclosure having a bottom 5,

6 and 7, parallel sides and an intermediate horizontal partition 8. The upper portion of the enclosure is further provided with vertical partitions 9 and 10 which are preferably arranged upon an incline and are secured to the said intermediate partition 8. These partitions serve to form

end compartments

11 and 12 and an intermediate compartment 13. The end compartments are enclosed by

sheet metal coverings

14 and 15, the same being tacked to the vertically disposed ends and partitions.

The intermediate or display compartment 18 is provided with a transparent covering 16 whereby the action of the rotatable disk 17 suspended therein may be viewed. This disk is provided with two or. more attached transversely arranged paddles 18 which obviously are carried with it, when rotated and serves to create a circulation of air that blows the light objects 19, contained within the compartment 13, around within the chamber in an attractive manner.

These objects may be feathers, small pieces of sponge, or the like and are designed to be contained within the chamber at all times and blown about therein when the disk is in motion.

20 and 21 are securedto a screw eye or other fastening means 24 in the end member 6'while the other ends of the cords are secured close together-at 25 to a vertically disposed lever 26 that extends through a slot 27 of the partition 8 and is pivotally mounted upon a stud'28 .in said slot.

A spring 29, one end of which issecured to the end member 7 and the other end to the lower portion of the lever 26, normally serves to hold the lever'in a forward position, to insure slackness in the

20 and 21 as indicated in Fig. 2.

A wire 30, one end of which is also attached to the lower portion of the lever 26, has its other end extendedthrough a hole 31 in the end member 6 and is provided with an operating finger piece 32. This finger piece through its wire connection with the lever 26 obviously serving to limit the action of the spring 29 and insure the limited slack positioning of the cords and disk.

With the parts in the position indicated in Fig. 2, it will readily be seen that by a quick pull of the ring 32 and its red against the action of the spring, will cause the cords to tighten, the disk to be raised and rotate in a forward direction in a manner to twist and contract the cords, and with the immediate slackening of the cords the disk will be lowered and cease to rotate, whereupon a further pull on the ring will tighten the cords, raise the disk, and cause them to unwind, rotating the disk and rewind in the opposite direction and at a faster rate of speed than the first rotation. Similar continued operation will keep the disk rapidly rotating backward and forward.

The toy can be similarly operated by the power connection shown, which as will be seen comprises a belt wheel 33 mounted upon a shaft 34 journaled in the sides of the casing and provided with a cam 35 within the lower compartment, the face of which cam engages the edge of the lever 26 and which together with the spring serves to throw the lever forward and backward in a way to rotate the disk as before described.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A toy of the class described, comprising a casing, a chamber having a transparent cover. a pair of horizontally arranged cords passing through the chamber and having one end secured to one side of the casing, a rotatable .t'an mounted upon the cords within the chamber, a pivotally mounted lever to one end of which one end of the cords are attached, and means connected with the lever for operating the same upon its pivot.

2. A toy of the class described, comprising a casing, a central chamber havii'ig a transparent cover, a pivotally mounted lever at one side of the chamber, a pair of horizontally arranged cords passing through the chamber and having one end secured to one side of the casing and the other end to said lever, a rotatable fan mounted upon the cords within the chamber. means 't'or holding the lever in a normal position, and means connected with the lever for operation against said holding means.-

3-. A toy of the class described, comprising a casing having central and end chambers, a transparent cover for the centralchamber, a. pivotally mounted lever in one of the end chambers, a pair of spaced apart horizontally arranged cords passing through the central chamber, having one end secured to one side of the casing and the other end to said lever, a rotatable fan mounted upon the cords within the central chamber, means for holding the lever in a. normal position, and means connected with the lever "for operation against said holding means.

4-. A toy of the class described, comprising a casing having a lower chamber, an upper central and end chambers, a transparent cover for the upper central chamber, a pivotally mounted lever in one of the end chambers, a pair of spaced apart horizontally arranged cords passing through the upper central chamber and having one end secured to one side of the casing and the other end to said lever, a rotatable fan mounted upon the cords within the central chamber, yieldable means within the lower chamber for holding the lever in a normal position, and means connected with the lever for operating the same against said holding means.
