This invention relates to spark arresters and more particularly to arresters for use in connection with chimneys of residences or factories. l
Heretofore numerous types of spark arresters have been built for use in connection with the chimneys and smoke stacks of industrial plants such arresters usually being of complicated construction and expensive to manufacture. The arresters of the type heretofore constructed are not practicable for general installation and use in connection with the chimneys of ordinary business structures and residences. To be readily adaptable to this use an arrester must be of simple construction, easily installed and inexpensive to manufacture.
Accordingly an object of the invention is to provide a new, simple7 and eiiicient spark arrester adapted for the said use.
Other objects, features and advantages of the present invention may be more readily ascertained by reference to the following Vdetailed description read in the light of the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the invention, and i Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same device showing the construction thereof in full detail.
Referring now to the drawings, 10 indicates a hollow shell of shape substantially conforming to the interior of a hollow tile of the type commonly used in the flues of c himneys both for ordinary business and residential structures. The shell 10 is provided with an external flange 11 at the'top thereof and extending about all sides thereof, such ange being formed as an integral part of the material comprising the shell 10. Inasmuch as the shell 10 is composed of a single piece of material such as galvanized iron it becomes necessary to cut the corners of the flange 11 into a plurality of tabs as indicated at 12. Wire cloth 20 of any suitable mesh may then be placed upon the ange 11'and bound in place by means of a binding strip 13. The binding strip 18 is composed of a single piece of flat material similar to that composing the shell 10, being of width sufficient to permit a portion thereof to be folded under the flange 11 i .asindicated atlt and also to permit thev top.

It will be Vobserved by reference to Fig. 1 that the shell 10 is of such size as to closely fit within a hollow tile indicated at 16 and to be held in place against downward movement by the flange 11 which overlaps and rests upon the top of the tile. For this reason the device presents an arrangement which may be easily installed and which may be quickly removed for repairs or for any purpose desired. Its weight together with the frictional engagement thereof with the inner wall of the tile 16 are suiicent to hold the arrester in place without the use of cement or other binding material. Being composed of a. minimum of parts, the manufacture of the same is facilitated, thereby reducing the cost of production. As the tiles employed for the fines of chimneys are of'standard shapes, the improved spark arrester may readily be manufactured in quantities for general use.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A device of the character described com! prising a polygonal-shaped hollow shell, said shell being provided with an external iiangeV :G0 wire cloth lying between the edges of the part of the shell, wire mesh cloth covering the top of said shell and resting on said flange, and a metallic binding strip holding said Wire mesh in place, said wire mesh being bent upwardly from the sides and ends of the shell into a substantially uniform convex shape.
3. A device of the character described comprising a hollow shell, said shell being provided with an external ange extending at right angles to the top of the shell, wire mesh cloth covering the top of the shell and resting on said ange, a binding strip holding said wire mesh in place, said strip being of such width as to substantially cover said flange, said device being adapted to lit Within and conform to the interior of a hollow tile and to be supported by the contact of the ange thereof with the top of the tile.
