This invention relates to drain pipe fittings and has a particular application to drain` pipes of' kitchen sinks.
One object of' the invention is to provide a convenient means for quickly flushing out the trap of a drain pipe when desired.
Another object is to provide a flushing connection to a drain pipe from a water supply pipe and to establish sucliconnection through a fitting having a container therein adapted to receive a cleansing compound and to deliver sucli; compound at a suitable predetermined rate to such water as may be delivered through the fitting for flushing purposes.
Still another object is to provide such a fitting with a valve controlling the connection with the sink (or other source of drainage water) so that said valve may be closed during a flushing operation and conserve such flushing pressure as might otherwise be i wasted by a flow of the flushing Watei to the sink or other vessel to be drained.
A further object is to adapt such a valve member to also serve, when desired, merely as a drain pipe closure, permitting` a desired level of water to be maintained inthe sink or other vessel from which the drain pipe leads.
`A still further obj ect is to provide for convenient control of the drainage .flow valve i. member and of the flushing valve without re- .vquiring the operator to reach under the sink. 1 These and various other objects the invention attains by the construction hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanyx ing drawings, wherein:-

`having the usual faucets 2 thereabove for den livering hot and cold water from supply pipes 3, in which pressure is maintained.
The usual drain pipe 4:, opening downwardly from the sink is equipped with the customary trap 5 to retain any heavy objects that pass into the drain pipe and to establish a water seal against upward flow of sewer gases. Y i
The present invention comprises a hollow fitting 6, having aligned openings 7 and 8 in its top and bottom, adapting it to be connected to the drain pipe 4, above the trap 5. While said fitting may be variously formed, it preferably-has the nature of a metallic casting, with its top 9 bolted or otherwise removably connected to the body thereof'. A connection 10 to said fitting from one of the pipes 3 is controlled by an ordinary valve 11, so that upon opening said valve, water under pressure is supplied to the fitting for the primary purpose of flushing out the trap 5. In order that the flushing water thus ad mitted may act eifectively to clean out the trap, it is necessary to maintain such water at substantially its original pressure as it en ters the trap. Therefore the drain pipe connection from the fitting 6 to the sink should bev-closedduring a flushing operation. le accomplish this, a flap valve 12 is pivoted, as
indicated at 18, in the upper portion of the fitting upon a bracket 13 carried by the cover L9, so that when swung from its normal open position shown in dash lines in Figure e to the raised position shown in full lines in said ligure, said valve seats against the top of the iitting1 and closes the opening 7 to the drain pipe.` Preferably the yseating face of the valve 12 islined witlirubber 14 or the like to better adapt it toformsa watery-tight closure.
To adaptthe iiushing water to act most f eectively upon any grease or sediment accumulatedin the trap `5, it is desirable to mix with such water a suitablequantity of some cleaning compound or detergent, that will cut the grease and act to loosen other dirt. rFhe invention provides for readily `aocomplishing `this result by removably mounting in the fitting 6 a container 15 for a cleaning compound which container is adapted to dispense the compound at a su1table rate to the flushing water, when the valve 11 is opened, by perforating the lower portion of said container, as indicated at 16, and disposing the portion so perforated directly opposite to the flushing water inlet, so that the pressure of such water will act upon the contents of the container through said perforations. As illustrated, the container 15 is of cylindrical form, and has its upper end permanently closed and flanged to seat upon a paclsrinor ring 17 to forni aw'ater seal with the top ofjth'e fitting 6. Adj aeent to its top said container is exteriorly threaded as indicated at 18, for .detachable connection with the fitting top. A filling opening 19 in the. upper portion on the container wall, (best seen in Figured) is'adapted to be normally closed byV a sleeve. 20, slidable and rotative on the container and limited in its sliding and rotation by'engagement of a pin 21, rigidly exteriorly carried by the container in a vertically elongated slot 22 of said sleeve, which slot has at its lower end a lateral extension 23 for receiving said pin to hold the sleeve normally lin the rosition closing the opening 19, as shown in igure 4.
Preferably a partition 24 extends from wall to wall of the fitting 6- below the pivot axis of the valveme'mber 12 so as to trap a quantity of wat-er' in that portion of the fitting which receives the perforated part 'of the container 15, thus tending tov maintain a waterssaturated "condition of the contents of said container.
`Ayn operating rod 25 for the valve 11 is suitably connected to the latten-as by an `arm 25 and extends forwardly and 'upwardly from said valve to-project freely at its uper end through a supporting plate 26 pre er'- ably formed 'of sheet metal and attached to and depending from a board 27 covering the front'of'the sink. f
To control the valve 12, a rockshaft 28 is vjournaled in aside wall of the fitting 6 and `carries arms28" and 28or respectively inside and outside of said vfitting'. The arm'28Il Vis bent so as to bear freely upon the valve 12 to raiseV the latter' to closedv position by rockingsaid shaft. The arm 28 has a suitable pivotal connection vto ajcontrol rod 29 which projects forwardly and upwardly, similarly to the rod 25 to freely pass through a slot 29L in the plate 26.
` The rod 26 preferably has. a 'shoulder 3o near its front 'end,`which may be engaged Awiththe front of the plate 26 to adapt the valve 12 to be firmly held in closedposition.V In theuse of the described device', whenit "is desired to flush out the trap, itis necessary `only to first close the valve 12 by pulling'up- "wardly on the rod 29 and then enga'gng the shoulder 30 with the plate 26. en the valve 12' is thus .secured in closedposition, Vthe rod 25 is drawn upward, opening the valve 11. The flushing water which is now admitted to the fitting 6` has no outlet except through the trap 5 and consequently acts under full pressure upon any accumulation of sediment, dirt, or grease in said trap. The effectiveness of this action will be materially increased by the cleaning compound which will be progressively washed out of the container l5 throu h the perforaaitiona thereof, so long as the ushing is continued.
It is to be noted that the valve 12 may be employed ifdesired, independently of the valve l11, to shut off the discharge of water fromvthe sink, when it is desired to maintain the latter filled or partly filled with water.
While it will be apparent that the illustrated embodiment of V,my invention herein disclosed is Well calculated to; adequately fulfill the objects andadvantages primarily stated, it is to be understood that the invention is susceptible to variation, modification and change withinthespirit andseope of the subjoined claims. y

5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a hollow fitting having its top formed with a collar projecting above said top for connection with a drain pipe and projecting also belo-w said top, a valve member seating against said collar to close said inlet, means eXteriorly carried by said fitting for controlling said valve member, said fitting having a drainage outlet and further having an opening for delivery to said fitting of a flushing liquid.
6. In a device of the character described, a hollow fitting having a drainage passage eX- tended between its upper and lower ends and formed at one side of said passage with a chamber opening into said passage and having in its lower portion aliquid trap, and a container for the cleansing compound removably carried by the top of said fitting and depending within said chamber, and having a perforated lower portion normally occupying said trap, said fitting having an inlet for a flushing liquid opening into said trap.
