UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WLADISLAW A. KOWALSKI, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ARTIFICIAL CANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,320, dated April 18, 1876; application filed February 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WLADISLAW A. Ko- WALSKI, a resident of the city of New Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Artificial Candles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification.
My invention in appearance resembles an ordinary candle, for which it is intended as an economical substitute. lts chief merits are cleanhness, durability, an'd economy, and its light is as good, if not better, than that of an ordinary candle; but my invention will be better understood by referring to the drawing, whereon Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2, a section thereof.
A represents the casing, which maybe made of metal, or of any other suitable material. lts outer surface is painted or enameled in imitation of sperm, wax, or other candles, and its lower end is provided with a double bottom a a, through each of which is an airinlet, 1 2. On the inside of a, and immediately over inlet 2, is soldered, or otherwise secured, a small hollow tube, B, for conducting fresh air to the interior of the candle, at a point above the fluid with which it is filled, to assist combustion. The wick-tube O is furnished with a threaded head, 0, which is screwed into the top of the candle, as shown. (1 is a small cap, which operates on the upper threaded stem of c, for the purpose of exposing more orless of the wick, so as to increase or diminish the size and brilliancy of the flame.
An important feature in this. invention is the introduction of a silk wick, by means of which a smokeless flame is obtained.
I claim as new- An artificial candle, composed of the easing A, provided with a double bottom a (1, having air-inlets l 2 and tube B, in combination with the wick-tube 0, provided with threaded head 0, cap 01, and a silk wick, as and for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed this 17th day of February, 1876.
WV. A. KOWALSKI.
