' NUT Filed 001;. 19, 1928 Patented JunelO, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
LEW'IS L. TURNER, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE CHARLES PARKER 00., F MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT NUT Application filed October 19,
This invention relates to an improvement in nuts and particularly to nuts which are used in connection with wrenches which itis desirable to hold against complete'removal from a nut. One particular use for such nuts is in connection with rotatable Vises. In such cases it is desirable that the wrench should always be in position for operation, and means should be provided to prevent its entire removal from the nut. The object of this invention is to provide a nut with means for preventing the removal of a wrench. from a nut when the nut is in position, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side View of a vise showing one of my improved nuts in connection therewith;
Fig. 2 is a side view of a nut detached;
Fig. 3 is an underside view of the same;
Fig. 4 is a side view of the nut with the wrench attached;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 6 is a top view illustrating a modified form of my invention;
Fig. 7 is a side view of the same;
Fig. 8 is a top view illustrating a further modification of my invention;
Fig. 9 is a side view of the same; and
Fig. 10 is a side view of a bolt embodying my invention.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a nut 10 made angular at its inner end 11 and 35 formed with an upwardly-extending cylindrical neck 12, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings, formed with an integral annular flange 18 slightly greater in diameter than the diameter of the angular portion 40 through its fiat faces. The length of the neck between the angular portion and the flange is somewhat greater than the thickness of the head'le of a wrench 15 which is placed onto the nut before the nut is applied to its bolt.
The nut thus described may be cast complete, thus simplifying the cost of manufacture, and an annular flange is provided at the upper end of a cylindrical neck extending beyond the annular portion of a nut so that the wrench is always in position to turn the nut,

part and turned, preparatory to taking a new grip without danger of its slipping off from the nut.
I claim:
A clamping-nut comprising a polygonal or faceted wrench-engaging portion, a shank rising above the upper face thereof and shaped to permit the wrench to turn freely upon it, and an annular guard located at the upper end of the said shank, made integral therewith, and overhanging the same in the horizontal plane to prevent the wrench from being bodily lifted 0E from the nut, the said overhanging annular guard being greater in diameter than the diameter of the polygonal wrench-engaging portion of the nut.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification. I
LEWIS L. TURNER.
