UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TILMANN BALLIET AND JOHN DEMAREST, OF NEVADA,'OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN STUM P-EXTRACTO RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [76,266, dated April 18, 1876; application filed 1 March 31, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, TILMANN BALLIET and JOHN S. DEMAREST, of Nevada, in the county of Wyandot and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump-Extractors; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form -a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved stump-extractor. Fig. 2 is an end View thereof, with an additional interposed block to correspondingly elevate one end of the lever as its opposite end is elevated by the screw; and Fig. 3 is a view, partly in section, of the lifting or elevating screw.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in stump-extractors; and it consists of mechanism substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to a horizontal lever of the second class, having one end bearing upon a block, a, resting upon a sill or base, a and between uprights a a firmly secured to the said sill or base. The
lever A being also confined between the said uprights, it is thus prevented from slipping 011' its block a. The opposite end of the lever A is manipulated by a jack-screw, B, or other power, to extract the stump.
A purchase may be obtained upon the stump by inserting one end of an open link, 1), into a closed link, I), encircling the lever A, and the other end under a root of the stump, as shown. The same end may be attained in various other ways known to the art.
To correspondingly elevate the confined end of the lever A with its opposite end, being elevated or manipulated by the screw, simply slip a second block, a thereunder, and so on, according to the height it is desired to elevate it, the lever having been first relieved ofpressare, 860.
This extractor is characteristic for its cheapness, simplicity, and effectiveness.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The lever A, bearing in and in combination with the uprights a a a, links I) b, and screw B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we hereunto affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
