IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,188, dated April 18, 1876 application filed August 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON MEAD, of the city, town, and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the construction of plows in such a manner that the front of the upper portion of the standard A shall be of the form of a section of an ellipse.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the standard of the plow. If a small ellipse, like the one sent with the model, is placed in front of the standard, with one end to the standard of the model or drawing, the form will readily be perceived.
The object of this form of standard is to prevent, so far as possible, by reducing the friction, the clogging of the plow in front of the standard with loose materials, such as stubble and the like, which are liable to be constantly accumulating in plowing, and prove much hinderance to good work. The elliptical form given to the front of the upper part of the standard A is designed to allow loose materials like stubble to pass to the right or left of the plow through the open elliptical space, thus tending to prevent the clogging of the plow, and secure its best work.
I claim- The standard of a plow, the upper front edge of which, above the point of the junction with the mold-board, conforms to a section of the shorter curve of an ellipse, the major axis of which is twenty inches and its minor axis ten inches, substantially as shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
