Description

A. S. BUNKER.
PERFORMING STAMPS.
latented Ap1^118,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT @PrienG AUGUSTUS S. BUNKER, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RTGHT TO JESSEE MOULTON, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PERFORATlNG-STANIPS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. P76, 163, dated April 18, 1876; application tiled December 4, 1875.
To all whom, 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUeUsTUs S. BUNKERJ, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and Gominonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Postage Stamp Canceler, ot' which the following is a specification The object of my said invention is to furnish the Post-Office Department with a stampA canceler, which shall be simple and durable in its construction, and effective for the purpose hereinafter described and claimed; and I do declare the following to be such an exact description of the same that others skilled in the art can make and use it thereby, like letters representing the same parts in each of the figures, of Which- Figure 1 represents a sectional View of my invention, showing all of its parts and their relation each to each; and Fig. 2 represents one`of the springs, and shows the points designed to imprint and cut or cancel a stamp.
A is the top or hand piece, provided with the Wedge-piece B, and held in place by the spiral spring F, and designed to press down and between the springs C C, for the purpose of forcing the points apart and cutting the stamp, as shown by the dotted lines c c; B, a Wedge piece, designed as above; G C, two springs, provided `with points designed to rst indent a stamp and then cut the same, by being forced apart by the Wedge B; these springs have their upper ends securely riveted to the faceplate tube; D, a face-plate, having a tube or prong designed to serve as a seat, to which is attached the springs C C, and also to hold the plate D to the handle E; E, a handle or case, designed to hold the hand-piece A, the face-plate D, and their attachments, and keep the same in proper adjustment, one with the other; F, a spiral spring, designed to keep in proper poise the hand-piece A and wedge B; Gr, a pin, designed to work in a slot or groove,
and serve as a guide for the hand-piece A; H,
a set-screw, designed to hold the face-plate D iirnily to the handle E.
To operate my said invention, the canceler is placed on a stamp, (the faceD resting thereon,) the point ot' the springs penetrating the same, when the Wedge-piece B is forced by the hand'piece A between the springs C U, throwing them apart and cutting a stamp, thus completely destroying the same without the use ot inks of any kind, all of which (now in use) are readily erased, and the imprint rcmoved therefrom.
My invention can be applied to the stampA now in use.
Having thus described my said invention
