Description

'June 3, 1930. E. w. HEISEY HOLDER FOR CANDLES Filed Jan. 30, 1928 I 3 2 INVENTOR.
5095', W He/Isy A TTORNE Y.
Patented June 3, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDGAR W. HEISEY, OF NEWARK, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO A. H. HEISEY COMPANY, OF NEWARK, OHIO, A PARTNERSHIP s HOLDER iron CANDLES Application filed January 30, 1928. Serial N0. 250,659.
My invention relates to a holder for candles. It has to do, particularly, with a novel com binationof a receptacle and a closure there for, with the closure specially designed to be both effective as a closure and to constitute common type of candle holder.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my holder for candles.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the structure shown in Figure 1.
In the drawings, I have shown my candle holder as comprising a receptaclel which is preferably of the general form shown. It will be apparent thatthis form of receptacle is more or less fanciful simulation of the base or dish portion of a common type of candle holder.
This receptacle portion 1 is provided with a neck 2 having an opening 3 therethrough.
. Adapted to be placed in this opening,.is a
closure member having a stopper portion 4. Formed integrally with this stopper portion and extending upwardly therefrom is a socket portion 5 having a socket 6 formed therein. The socket portion of the closure member is preferably formed with an upwardly and downwardly flared apron. This apron is of graceful curvature and is effective to catch any drippings from the candle under all normal conditions of use.
The stopper portion 4: of the closure memher is separated from the socket portion 5 of this member by an inwardly curved waist 7 The size and curvature of this waist portion' and of the socket portion thereabove is such that it lends itself readily to encircling by the fingers of the hand in the transporting of the closure member from one place to another. i
In practice, the socket 6 of the socket member 5 is intended to receive a candle of any form. The receptacle 1 may be filled or par tially filled with a colored liquid or powder or may be given additional ornamentation or distinctive appearance in any desired manner. The receptacle 1 is preferably of blown glass and the closure member is preferably of pressed, glass.
One of theadvantages of my invention arises from the fact that the stopper of the closure member has a ground-in fit in the neck of the receptacle and is therefore fluidtight. Another advantage of my invention consists in the fact that this closure member may be transported from place to place indepedently of the receptacle and with a candle in the socket thereof. Furthermore, the closure member is of a size and contour to facilitate grasping and carrying, while the candle is in its socket and burning and, during such carrying, the integrally formed apron adequately protects the hand of the holder from drippings from the candle under all normal conditions of transportation.
Likewise, this apron will have the effect of absorbing color rays, either from the colored material in the receptacle or from the candle light or from other sources.
It will be seen that I have provided a candle holder which is shaped to construct and which lends itself readily to ornamentation; It, will also be apparent that it has certain advantageous structural features. which are simple and graceful and which also contribute to the utility of the candle holder whether its parts be used separately or together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a candle holder, a base which takes the form of a glass receptacle, anda closure for said receptacle having a socket therein for thereception of a candle, said closure having a shank curved to fit the fingers of the hand.
2. In a candle holder, a base which takes the form of a glass receptacle, and a closure for said receptacle having a socket therein for the reception of a candle, and an apron carried by said closure.
3. A closure -for a receptacle comprising a socket member adapted to receive a candle, a shank curved to lit the fingers oi the hand, and an apron surrounding said socket memher.
In testimony whereof I, hereby aflix my signature.
EDGAR XV. HEISEY.
