My invention has relation toimprovements in feeding devicesfor Crushers.
The primary object of my invention 1s to provide an automatically operating feeding device adapted alternately to increase and diminish the width of the opening ofa sup-y passage in Y A still further object is to provide a feeding device which is automatically operated by the gyrations imparted to the Crusher head shaft, to adapt said feeding device to alternately l1ncrease and decrease the width of the opening of a supplemental hopper leading to the Plassage in which ,the material 1s crushed.
With the above primary object and other incidental objects in view, the invention con-` sists of the devices and parts,`or the equivalents thereof, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

i I have shown the invention in` connectlon with the form of crusher illust-rated in the accompanying drawings, although it will be understood that the invention is applicable` to any form of crushing machine wherein provision is made for rockingor tilt-ing the feeding device.
The fra-me of the machine in connection with which the invention is shown, consists of a lower section 3 and an upper section 4 suitably connected together.

Surrounding the lower endl of the sleeve and keyed thereto is a beveled gear 7 A horizontal drive shaft 8 has its bearings in the lower portion of the frame member 3, and carries at its inner end a bevel pinion 9, which meshes with the bevel gear 7. In this manner, rotation is imparted to the sleeve 5'.
The bore of the sleeve 5 is` arranged eccentrically, and within the bore is disposed a vertical shaft 10 which extends upwardly into the upper frame member 4, and carries a conical crushing head 11. Surrounding the Crusher head, and spaced a desired distance therefrom, is an 'outer coacting crushing jaw or member '12, said jaw having its inner surface inclined in a direction to form, in connection with the inclined surface of the crushing head, an outwardly flaring and downwardly converging passage 13, said passage leading to a discharge chamber 14. l

It will' be seen that bolts 18 pass freely through the to plate 15, and'have their lower ends threa ed, said threaded lowerends entering threaded recesses in the top pori tion 4 of the frame. A coiled springv19 surrounds each-of these bolts, the lower end of said spring bearing against the upper surface of the top plate 15, and the upper end thereof bearing against aplate 2O movably mounted on each bolt. If, however, the passage in which thematerial is crushed, becomes clog ed by overloading, or if the crushing jaws ail to crush the material passing through the passage, then the outer crushing member or jaw by reason of the pressure exerted thereon will be raised upwardly, and also forced laterally slightly. With the up movement of this crushing aw, the top plate 15 is raised against the contrary force exerted by the coiled springs. In this way, the passage in which the material is crushed, ris widened, and the clogging material thereby permitted to pass therefrom, and as the material flows from the passage, the coiled springs recoil, which acts to force the top plate 15, and the outer crushing jaw, downwardly, and to normal' position.
A description will now be given of the improved feeding mechanism with which this application is particularly concerned.
It will be seen that a bolt 22 extends upwardly lfrom the vertical shaft 10. This bolt is threaded for the greater part of its length, and the threads at the lower portion enter a threaded recess formed in the shaft 10. Also turning on the threads of the bolt is a nut 23 which is adapted to be turned down against a cap' 24 surmounting the upper end of the shaft, and provided with an opening through which the bolt freely passes. This cap 24 bears against the upper end of the conical Crusher head. A lock nut 25 also turns on the threads of the bolt 22 and against the uut 23, so as to lock the parts together.

A bar 33 extends across the inlet mouth of the supplemental vhopper and passing in this bar is a vertical rod 34, the upper end `of which. isthreaded. A nut 35 is turned' downwardly on the threads against the upper side of this bar and another nut 36 is turned upwardly on thev threads against the underside of said bar, whereby the rod is firmly clamped in its depending position. The lower end of the rod passes freely through an opening 37 in the top of the cone shaped feed regulatin device 29, and the lower extremity/of sai rod is enlarged and rounded, as indicated by the numeral 38, to fit beneath and conform to the under, surface of the feed regulating device.
Also mounted on the rod 34 above the feed regulating. device is a plate 39, the under surface of which is concave in form to fit the correspondingly shaped upper surface of the feed regulating device.
e By the construction and arrangement just described, it is obvious that a universal joint movement is formed between the rod 34 and the feed regulator.
In the use of the invention, the material tobe crushed is fed through the inlet end of the supplemental hopper and discharges from the lower open discharge end thereof The material will slide down the inclined or sloping surface of the feed regulator and enter the main hopper, and will pass through the lower open end of said main hopper into the passage 13, where it iscrushed by the action of the two crushing jaws.
It frequently happens that the material is fed into a hopper either too vrapidly or unequally, so as to cause an overloading of the material in the passage 13, and consequent clogging of said passage and the preventing of the crushing jaws accomplishing their work. To regulate the feed, I have provided 30, through a spout, and this naturally causes the material to accumulate in the hopper to a greater extent at the point of exit from the spout than at other points, and consequently prevents an even feed of the material to be crushed into the passageway 13. M proved feed regulator also obviates this. A gyratory movement is imparted to this feed regulator, and vconsequently even though the material is introduced into the sup lemental hopper through a spout, yet the tiltlng of the feed regulator will cause an even distribution ofthe material into the main hopper.
It will also be seen that by the provision of the coiled springsv28, thefeed regulator is susceptible to a yielding motion, which in many instances, will be found very desirable. While I have disclosed the coiled springs as located between the plate 26 and the underside of the feed regulating device 29, et I do not wish to be understood as con ing l,myself to this vparticular location of vsaid spring 28. Of course a gyratory movement c is imparted to the vertical shaft 10, and its crushing head 11 by reason of the fact that said shaft is mounted eccentrically in the bore of the sleeve 5. 4
It will be understood, however, that the ini vention is not limited to this particular means for imparting thedesired movement to the feed regulator, as -any other mechanism may be employed whereby the feed regulating device may be freely moved or gyrated on its universal joint connection. Y
Attention is also directed to the fact that while the invention is particularly desirable for use in connection with crushing machines,
yet the improved feed regulating mechanism may be employed'in connection with various machines wherein material is introduced through a hopper, and wherein it is desirable to maintain an even distribution of the material ,passing through the discharge opening of the hopper.
A very important feature of my invention is the provision of means whereby an adjust-v ment vertically of the feed regulator is made possible. -The preferred means for thispurpose consists of the nuts 35 and 36, which,
when turned, will cause an up or down move-- ment of the rod 34, and consequently of the feed regulator 29, depending upon the d1rection of turning of said nuts.
Of course, when the adjustment above set forth is made, it is likewise necessary to adjust the plate or collar 26. As one means for accomplishing this last referred to ad]us t ment, a washer 40 is employed which vis mounted on the bolt 22, and interposed between the nut 25 and plate 26. f As the adjustment of the feed regulator 29 is altered, a thicker or thinner washer, vas maybe required, is substituted. v
What I claim as my invention is:
l. In a feeding device forcrushers and the like, the combination of a `frame provided with a discharge opening forthe material, a main hopper or housing mounted on the frame and communicating with the discharge opening of saidl frame, a supplemental hopper'mounted to discharge into the main hopA per or housing,a universally' mounted feed regulating device mounted below the discharge opening of the supplemental hopper, and means acting `upon the feed regulating device to cause alternate rocking or tilting of said device in different directions on its universal mounting, to thereby alternately' increase and decrease the width of the discharge opening of the feed regulating device at different points. i

` to thereby alternately increase and decrease the width of the discharge opening of the supplemental hopper at different points.'

In a feeding device for crushers and the like, the combination of a frame having an opening for the discharge of the material, a gyratory shaft mounted in said frame, a main hopper or housing mounted on the frame and communicating with said opening, a supplemental hopper niounted to discharge into the main hopper or housing, a bar extending across the mouth`of the supplemental hopper. a rod connected to and depending` from said bar. the lower end of said rod being enlarged and rounded, .a cone-shaped feed'regulating device mounted on the rod and resting on the rounded lower end of the rod, a plate mounted on the `rod and having a concave under surfacelagainst which the rounded apex of the cone-shaped feeding devicebears, and a connection between the gyratory shaft andthe feed regulating device, whereby the -gyrations of the shaft are imparted to the feed regulating device, to thereby cause said de- -vice to alternately increase and decrease the a'bar extending across the mouth of the vsupplemental hopper, a rod secured to and depending from saidbar, the said rod provided with a lower enlarged rounded end, a cone- .shaped feed regulating device mounted on the rod and restingupon therounded lower end of said rod, a plate also mounted on the lrod and provided with a concave under surface against which the rounded apex of the feed re ulating device bears, a rod extending upwar 1y from the gyratory shaft, a plate posed between said plate and the under side of the cone-shaped feed regulating device.

In a feeding device. for crushers and the like, the combination of a frame provided Kwith an opening for the discharge of the material, a rn'ain hopper or housing mounted o'n the frame and communicating with said opening, a supplemental hopper mounted to discharge `into the main hopper or housing, a feed regulating device movablymounted below the opening of the supplemental hopper, means for vertically adjusting the feed regulating device, a gyratory shaft mounted l inthe frame, a rod extending upwardly from the gyratory shaft, a plate carried by said rod, spring -mechanism interposed between the plate and the feed regulating device, and means for adjusting the said plate vertically on the rod.

In a feeding device for crushers and the like, the combination of a frame having means for acting on the material passing through the machine, a hopper leading to the means which acts on the material, a universally mounted feed regulating device mountedbelowthe discharge opening of the hopper, and means acting upon the feed regulating device to cause alternate rocking or-tilting'of,
said device in different directions on its uni- Versal mounting, to thereby alternately increase and decrease the width of the discharge 'opening of said hopper at different points.4

In a feeding device-for crushers and the like, the combination of a frame having means for acting on the material passing through the machine, a hopper leading to the means which acts on the material,` a spring-pressed or cushioned feed regulating device mounted movably below the discharge opening of the hopper, and means for alternately 'rocking or tilting said feed regulating device in different directions to thereby al-V ternately increase and decreasethe width of the discharge opening of the hopper at different points.
11. In a feeding device for crushers and the like, the combination of a frame having means for acting on the material passing through the machine, a hopper leading tov the means which acts on the material, a spring-pressed or cushioned universally mounted feed regulating device disposed below the dischargeopening of the hopper, and
means acting on the feed regulating device to cause alternate rocking orl tilting of said device in different directions on its universal mounting, to thereby alternately increase and decrease the width of the discharge opening of the hopper at different points.

In a feeding. device for crushers and the like, the combination of a fra-me having means adapted to act on the material passing through the machine, a hopper leading to the4 'means which acts on the material, a feed reg- G5 carQried by said rod, and coiled springs inter-l ulating device movably connected to the frame and positionedclosely elovv` and extending into the openingofthe', hopper, and
means forming part ofthe rotary crushing `member for alternatelyV rocking or tilting.

In a crusher having a frame provided with a concave crushing member and a crusher head, a feeding means therefor, comprising a material conduit carried by the'frame and positioned above the Crusher head, a feed controlling member pivotally and loosely sup-- ported from the frame and extending beneath the conduit, and means carried by the crusher head for imparting a rocking movement -to the controlling member.
14. In a Crusher having a frame provided with a concave Crusher member and a crusher head, afeeding means therefor, comprislng a material conduit carried `by the frame;
and positioned above Crusher head, a feed controlling member pivotally and loosely sup` ported from the frame and extending beneath the conduit, said crusher head turning in an eccentric path in the concave member,
and a'connection between the Crusher head andthe controlling member flor imparting a gyratory movement to the controlling mem- 15. In a Crusher having a frame provided with a concave Crusher member and Crusher head, a feedin a material conduit carried by the frame and positioned above the crusher head, a feed controlling member pivotally and loosely supported from the frame and extending beneath the conduit, said Crusher head turning'in an eccentric path in the concave member, and la yielding connection between the Crusher head and controlling member for imparting a gy- `ratory movement to the controlling member.
