IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176.112, dated April 11, 1876; application filed March 11, 1876.,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. W001), of Mount Juliet, in the county of Wilson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lamp-Extinguisher5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figures 1, '2, and 3 of the drawings are representations of vertical central sections of my lamp-extinguisher.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an extinguishing attachment for lamp-burners, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.-
1n the annexed drawing, A represents the ordinary collar of a lamp-burner, with perforated flange or disk B, wick-tube O, and cap D, all constructed in any of the known and usual ways.
The extinguisher consists of a cap made in twoparts, G G, each having two arms or projections, aat, extending down the wick-tube G, to which they are pivoted and allowed to fall apart by their own weight. The lower ends of the arms a are made wide, as shown, and rest upon a plate, 1), below where they are pivoted. An arm, d, extends from the plate 1) down through the perforated disk B, and the lower end of said plate is formed or provided with afoot, e. Through this foot passes a rod, f, the upper end of which passes through the disk B, and has a head, or its equivalent, on its extreme upper end, to prevent its falling through the same.
To the lower end of the rod f, immediately below the foot 0, is hooked a bell-shaped dislr, h, with weight H suspended therefrom.
To close the extinguisher it is only necessary that the plate b be raised a little, which is accomplished by the bell-shaped disk h acting against the samewhen the lamp is turned at an angle from the perpendicular.
The extinguisher thus acts automatically in putting out the flame when the lamp is accidentally upset; and by its construction it fills nearly all the space in thecone or flamecap D, thus causing the draft or cool air to pass between the arms of the cap, forcing its way up beside the wick-tube, driving all the heat upward, generating no gas or vapor whatever; consequently there is nothing to cause the lamp to explode while at rest.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The bisected cap G G, each half-formed with two arms, a. a, pivoted to the wick-tube,
in combination with the plate b, weight E,
and rod (1, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The plate I), with arm 01 and foot 6, in
combination with the cap G, arms a, rod f,
and disk h, with weight H, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
