Description

May Z7, 1930. c. A. DOMLER BRACELET FOR WATCHES OR THE LIKE Filed July z. 1929 .Farley 27, 193@ massa PATE? CHARLES A. DOMLER, OF PROVDENCE, RHODE XSLAND, ASSGNCR T0 THE RADLEY COM'EANY, ENC., CF PROVDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, A CORPORATION 0F RHODE ISLAND BRACELET FOR WATCHES OR THE LIKE Application nlerl July 30,
rl`his invention relates to articles of jewelry such as bracelets or braclelet watches, and has for its principal object the provision of a watch case or the like having a channel therethrough receiving` a slidable portion of an extensible bracelet. Another object is to provide a watch case having a substantially continuous, flexible bracelet so asso ciated with the case that the effective length l0 of the bracelet may be increased or decreasec without disconnecting the bracelet attachments. Further objects reside in the im proved features of the watch bracelet hereinafter desc ibed, as pointed out in the appended claims.
A recommended embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig'. 1 is a front view of the improved bracelet watch;
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2, with the watch case open and certain parts shown in section;
5 Fig. l is a plan view of a detached back section of the watch case;
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and
Fig'. 6 is a detail view illustrating an optional locking' member for the bracelet.
The watch case chosen for the purpose of illustration comprises front and back sections i' and 8 respectively, pivoted at 9 to swing from open to closed position, the sections having* telescoping side flanges 11 and 12 provided with snap fastenings, such as complomental dctents 13 and recesses 1&1, to lock the parts together. The watch movement may be mounted within the front section 7 in any usual manner, and the watch case may obviously be fashioned in any desired size or shape.
A bridge member 15 is preferably fixed along the inner face of the back 8, as by soldering or otherwise, to provide an elongate channel 16 for receiving a slidable portion of the watch bracelet, the channel preferably extending from end to end of the watch parallel to the back section 8. A crossbar 17 preferably is supported upon the 1929. Serial N0. 382,116
bridge member 15 at the free end of the baci; to furnish a constricted opening through which one end of the bracelet may be inserted and anchored.
he bracelet 18 may be a ribbon, strap or metal mesh band, or may be made of any other suitable flexible material. @ne end of the bracelet preferably is inserted beneath the bar 17 and a tached to the watch by an anchoring member which may be detachable if desired. The anchoring member shown is a detachable one, consisting of a coiled wire 19 which is threaded into the end of the mesh bracelet shown in the drawings. The an choring` member is larger in cross section than the constricted opening through which the bracelet end is inserted, thereby to retain said end behind said opening. The bracelet is doubled upon itself adjacent said attached end to form a loop 20, then extends through the channel 16, and has its opposite end adjustably connected to the loop 20, as by a connector 21, so that the effective length of the bracelet may be adjusted by sliding the bracelet through the connector 21 and the channel 16 to vary the length of the looped portion 20.
Thus the bracelet may be extended by shortening the loop 2O when the article is to be applied over the hand, and may be tightened upon the wrist of the wearer by lengthening said loop. The tension of the tightened bracelet may in many cases be suficient to hold it against accidental loosening, but means may be provided to prevent casual extension of the bracelet, if desired. For eX- ample, the watch case may be provided at one end with a bar 22 normally offset above one end of the channel and extending beneath the bracelet to form a bend in the bracelet and provide frictional resistance to free sliding movement of the bracelet; or a slider 23 having a locking` lever 24tof usual construction may surround the looped portion of the bracelet, as indicated in Fig'. 6, to secure the bracelet in its adjusted position.
By the arrangement above described, the improved bracelet watch may readily be applied to the wrist of the wearer and adjusted in posit-ionbyvarying the length of the bracelet loop Without disconnecting the b aceletl Accordingly, no snap :tastenings or other latches, which are likely7 to be accidentally released or to become inoperative dui-ling` use, are necessary for connecting;` individual bracelet sections es in 'the Jracele's heretotore or The channel througl the bracelet slides may be torined in the watch case itself, as illustrated, or maf.' be party ot an attachnient applieffl to the back oli the Watch. Obviously, the inrprovcd bracelet may be employed in association With cases or bracelet members of other useful or ornamental articles et jewelry; and th structin'al details of the apparatus herein described may be Varied to suit particular purposes w'thoutdeparting from the essence of this invention as delined in the appended claims.
