IMPROVEMENT m EARTH-AUGERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,029, dated April 11, 1876; application filed January 7, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. METZ, of Pittsburg, in the county of Van Buren, State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Angers, of which the. following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains' to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Fignre 1 is an isometrical perspective view, and Fig. 2 a bottom or end view.

Like letters of reference indicate correspond- -ing parts in the different figures of the drawing.

My invention relates to that class of angers which are employed in boring wells, postholes, 860.; and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a simpler, cheaper, and more efi'ective device of this character is used than is now in ordinary use.

The nature and operation of my invention Will be readily obvious to all conversant with such matters from the following description.

In the drawing, A represents the main frame, which is provided with the shank B, and connected with the rod C. An outwardly-curved plate, H, is permanently attached to one side of the frame, and arranged opposite this there is a corresponding plate, G, which is hinged at h h. This plate is secured by a key and bolt at g i, and is hinged to enable the implement to be cleaned'or emptied more readily. The plates, when in position, form the body of the auger, which resembles in shape a hollow truncated cone inverted. Projecting laterally from the frame. upon either side are a series of slightly-curved,teeth or shares, I J, for disintegrating the earth, and enabling the auger to bore with greaterease and facility; and attached to the lower cross bar or end of the frame are two cutting pods or bits, K K, arranged as best shown in Fig. 2. These bits are of the ordinary description, being provided with cutting-edges, and so shaped as to form the segment of a screw,

. which enters the earth as the rod 0 is turned.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is The improved well-auger described, con sisting of the frame A,'cur\'ed plates H G, provided with securing devices 2' g, teeth I J, bits K K, and rod 0, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
