NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW B. LEWIS, JR, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAIL-EARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,0 [7, dated April 11, 1876 application filed February 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, A. B. LEWIS, Jr., of Gincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bail-Ears for Buckets; and I do 'hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva tion, sectioned in detail, showing a bucket as equipped with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a view of one ear detached.
My invention relates to bail-ears for buckets or other vessels; and consists in an ear provided with a rivet or lug attachment, whereby the eye ofthe bail can be securely engaged with same.
Heretofore, in ear attachments, it has been difficult to obtain such a rigid and durable engagement for the bail as would insure a permanent bearing; but by suitably connecting to the ear, a rivet, forming either a separate part, or cast or forged in a single piece of metal therewith, the above premise is obviated.
A is any bucket, to which is applied the ear attachment B, provided at either extremity or intermediate points with the prongs 0 adapted to pass through the side of the bucket, and thereby secure the ear to the same. D is a rivet, which may be at any convenient position on the ear B, and which forms the bearing for the bail E. This rivet D may be cast or constructed in one and the same piece of metal as the ear, or it may be entirely independent and separately adjustable. Its special form isimniaterial to the present issue, as its interior extremity may be clinched and bound to the inner face of the ear-plate, or it may be provided with a thread corresponding to same on the ear, as male and female screws, or nut and washer attachments may be added thereto. So, too, its head may be plain, square, 8220., all of the foregoing modifications being matters of taste and construction, which do not affect the spirit of my invention. Likewise, the within-described bail-car does not retract or limit the invention, since it is apparent that the former can be varied or be of any nature whatever without impairing this feature of an improvement on an ear which gists my idea.
The bail E can engage with the rivet D by means of the eye 6, as shown in the drawing,- or any other convenient attachment can be made use of, the bail and its construction forming no part of this application, and being of any form desired.
All of theaabove parts are of any material suitable to the occasion or use.
I am aware that a bail-ear, consisting of a single metallic strap, having two lateral prongs and a loop for the attachment of the bail, has been used heretofore; and, also, a rivet or lug has been combined with an ear that is secured to the bucket by screws; hence, I do not claim, broadly, the combination of a lug with a bail ear; but
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of rivet or lug D, with an elongated bail-ear, having upper and lower prongs O G, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
' 2. The combination of the baitE, having eye 6, with bail-ear having upper and lower prongs O O and rivet D, substantially as and for the purpose specified. j
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of February, 1876.
