DISPLAY PACKAGE FOR PAPER NAPKINS OR THE LIKE Filed Jan. 5, 192,9
Patented May 27, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RICHARD W. IBEACH, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOB TO BEACH 615 ARTHUR. INC, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION DISPLAY PACKAGE FOR PAPER NAPKINS OR THE LIKE Application filed January 5, 1929. Serial No. 880,531.
' This invention relates to display packages and has for its object the provision of a package of paper napkins or "the like .particularly suited for sale over store counters, the package being so formed that an individual or. specimen napkin is exposed to the sight and touch of the customer while the remaining n'apldns are entirely enclosed and protected from soil or damage through hanage.
dling. The invention resides in the completed package and in the container or wrapper employed in making up the package.
Heretofore a great drawback to the sale of goods such as paperinapkins has been that the packages in which they were contained did not properly display the goods, it being either necessary to open the package to inspect the contents or there being merely an opening or window in the package through which a portion of the outermost napkin or the like could be seen. In the latter form of package dirt is allowed to enter through the opening, thus perhaps soiling a number of the napkins, and furthermore the edges of the napkins are not exposed and it is impossible to take hold of a specimen so that its texture and quality may be ascertained through the sense of touch as well as sight. The package which I have devised overcomes the difliculties above mentioned by securely protectingv all of the contents of the package except one specimen article which is so positioned that the customer may take hold of it and examine it without soiling the remaining napkinsin the pack- Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawiggs, discloses a preferred embodiment there- 0 Referring to the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a completed package embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a simialr view of the package with only the innermost flaps connectedand before the placing of the specimen napkin and the fasizening together of the outermost flaps; an
Fig. 3 is a development of a sheet of cardboard or the like, illustrating how the .container is formed. The container consists of a base portion 21 which ordinarily will be printed and will form the front of the package, this portion being preferably of rectangular form and being set off by creases or lines of fold indicated at 22. The side walls 23' of the container may beof any predetermined height and are set off by the creases 22 and by a crease or line of fold 2i, and end folds 25, there being a triangular section 26 between folds 25 to adjacent side walls, said triangular section adapted to be folded on a median line*27fso as to enclose and reinforce the corners of the package as will be readily apparent from view Fig. 2. Flaps 28 and 29 are provided at opposite corners of the sheet as shown ,in the developmentof the latter in Fig. 3, the flap 28'being provided with a slit 31 and the flap 29 being provided with a hooked portion 32 adapted to enter the slip 31 to hook said flaps together over the bulk of the napkins to be contained in the package, said napkins being indicated by the reference character 33. After said flaps 28 and 29 are connected together over the napkins '33, a specimen napkin 34, which, as in the case of napkins 33, is preferably folded and of rectangular outline, may be placed over said flaps 28 and 29 as shown in Fig. 1. Flaps 35 and 36 are provided on the corners of the sheet shown at upper left and lower right I in Fig. 3, the flap 35'being provided withs;
a slit 37 and the flap 36 being provided with;
a hooked portion 38, these flaps being of sim- ,ilar formation and construction to flaps 28' without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and that it may be suitable for packaging other articles than napkins.
I claim: 1. A package comprising a wrapper, a
quantity of paper napkins or the like enclosed by customers and the remaining napkins being inaccessible and thus protected against damage or soiling.
2. A package comprising a wrapper, a quantity of paper napkins or the like enclosed in said wrapper, the latter having flaps extending over said napkins, and a specimen napkin disposed outside said flaps, said wrapper having additional flaps of triangular form extending over said specimen napkin and having end parts adapted to be hooked together, triangular portions of the specimen napkin being exposed so that it may be seen and felt by customers and the remaining napkins being inaccessible and thus protectedv from damage or soiling.
3.'A package comprising a wrapper, a-
quantity of paper napkins or the like enclosed in said wrapper, the latter having flaps extending over said napkins andfastened together to hold the napkins in compact formation and a specimen napkin disposed outside said flaps, said wrapper having additional flaps extending over said specimen napkin and fastened together to hold the latter upon the package, portions of said specimen napkin being exposed so that it can be vseen and felt-by the customers and the remaining napkins being entirely enclosed,
. 4. A package com rising a wrapper, a quantity of paper nap ins or the like enclosed in said wrapper, the latter havi'ng flaps extending over said napkins and fastened together to hold the napkins in compact formation and a specimen napkin disposed outside said flaps, said wrapper having additional flaps extending over said specimen napkin and fastened together to hold the latter upon the package, portions of said specimen napkin being exposed so that it can be seen and felt by the customers and the remaining napkins being entirely enclosed, each pair of said flaps being of triangular form and being disposed at right angles to the other pair, the innermost flaps covering the portions of the napkins not covered by the outermost flaps and the exposed portions of said I specimen napkin being disposed over the innermost flaps and separated thereby from the remaining napkins in the package.
5. A container forfolded paper napkins or the like, comprising a foldable cardboard sheet creased to provide a central rectangular base portion upon which the napkins may be placed, side walls of predetermined heightand two pairs of flaps, each of triangular form, the ends of the flaps of each pair being formed to hook together, one pair. of said flaps being adapted to overlap and secure the bulk of the napkins in package formation v and the other flaps being adapted to extend across the package at right angles to said first lnentioned flaps, whereby a specimen napkin may be placed over the innermost flaps and held to the package by the outermost flaps lap and secure the bulk of: the napkins in package formation and the other flaps being adapted to extend across the package at right angles to said first mentioned flaps, and being cut so as to cover only a portionof the flap side of the package whereby a specimen nap--.
kin may be placed over the innermost flaps and held to the package by the outermost flaps and leave portions thereof exposed for inspection.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name to this specification.
