This invention relates to a fluid pressure i motor, such, for example, as a pneumatic motor employed for operating a suitable tool,
, such as a surfacing tool, although the invention 'is not limited to the particular tool which 'the motor rotates.
The .principal object of the invention is to provide a construction which embodies to 'a high degree the features of compactness,
- eiciency, lightness in weight, and-ease of assembly.
A' further object is to provide a construction involving a cylinder body with a lateral. extension for sliding blades, .air ports and '415 the like, together-with end plates, the whole being so constructed that the plates can bel fitted to the body and centralized thereon without the necessity for interlitting por-l tions which would interfere with`the space 2o desired for fluidpressure passageways and which enables the inner sides of the plates where they, engage the extension of thecylinder. body to form smooth and uninterrupted guide surfaces for the abutment l blades which .reciprocate in the extension and whose inner edges engage the rotor,
which surfaces are continuations of the surfaces ofthe plates which form'the4 end Walls of the cylinder.
.tion wherein the cylinder body has a laterlallyprojecting handle which supplies the air vto the. cylinder body, the. motor having a spindle for governing the speed of the motor, with suitable provision arranged without substantially increasing the bulk of the mo-v tor for conducting. the air from. the lateral extension-of the cylinderpody to which the handle is .attached to the governorchamber vand hackl again tothe extensionnbefore entering the main inlet passageway formed in the cylinder body.
Afurther object is (to provide a construcgovernor mounted on the end of the motor he above and otherfobjects-'areobtained by my invention which may be herebrielly` sfeciacaiomnd sa .forth -inf' *the-inner cy In the accompanying sheets of drawings wherein I have illustrated the preferred form of the invention, Fig. 1 is a plan view of a fluid pressure tool embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a'sectional view substantially along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the rotors of the tool; Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same; Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are detached views showing, respectively, one ofthe end plates, the cylinder body, and the other end plates; Fig. 8 is an end view of the motor with the adjacent end plate removed; Fig. 9 is an inside view of one of the end plates showing the segmental flange for centralizing the end plate' on the cylinder body; andFig. 10 is a side elevation of the cylinder body of Fig. looking toward the cylinder extension. Y
Referring now to the drawings, ,the tool,
herein illustrated includes a motor-having a' cylinder body 15 formed in one piece, as
hereinafter described, and closed at its ends Y by two end plates 16 and 17 having bearings 18 for a motor spindle 19 which is provided at one end with a suitable tool here shown as a surfacing disk'20, the outer flat face of which is adapted to be pressed against the work to be surfaced. Other tools may be employed in place thereof. l
The cylinder body has a cylindrical bore extending fromend to end therethrough, and mounted midway of the ends of the cylinder body is an annular dividing partition 21 held in place by .radially disposed screws 22 passinguthrough the vcylinder body into the periphery ofthe partition. On opposite sides of the partition and keyed or otherwise secured to the shaft are two eccentric rotors "23, shown detached in Figs.4 3 and 4, which rotors are spaced'lSOC apart and, as illus- .trated in Figs; '2, 3 and 4, are hollowed out. forA the sake of lightness with the metal dise posed `so thatfeach is in staticand kinetic balance. I The cylinder body is formed on. the -side with a lateral extension 24 and formedpinthis extension and extending inward from op- ..posite-A ends ofthe cylinder body 'toward but "not entirely tothe center; and also formed f from the. ogpos'iteend 4of Ithe extension to j drical bore, are two guide alotaf` 25 which receive sliding abutments 26 whose tools where accuracy, eiciency, and lightness inner ends are maintalned in contact with are required.
Themachine has two handles, one, desigbetween these uide slots 254 is the same as nated 33, being secured to a lug 34 formed on 'the thickness o the partition 21, as shown in the side of thev cylinder body, and the other, Fig. 2.- Additionally, the extensionl 24 has designated 35, being secured onto'the) end of I 4formed from side' to side therethrough on the' cylinder extension 24. Thehandle 35 has opposite sides of the guideways a main a passageway 36 extending therethrough for' j l inlet passageway 27 for the motive fluid the air which operates the motor, the air being which-is generally air and will be so referred supplied to this passageway through an inlet.
to hereafter, and a main air outlet passageopening 37 formed at theextreme end ofthe way 28. There is formed also in the eXtenhandle and adapted to receive aV suitable su sion and extending from the outer face thereply tube or hose. Also extending longitu iof to the inner bore a series of auxiliary inlet nally of the handle parallel to the inlet paspassageway 27, extending at right angles which lubricant may pass tothe air passagethereto, and a s eries of auxiliary exhaust way 36 at a rate dependent upon the position .passageways which intersect the main eX- of an adjustable needle valve `39.

It will be noted that the base of the handle fits against and in contour'` corresponds to the heretofore required in tools of this kindto body extension and-of the end of the extenalign the parts, especially in the best designed sion of the end platev 16.` The outer end of terminates in the end of the'extension of this` vIn order that the air may be conducted l passageway 49 is in registration with the ininto the governor, and when the motor is in operation it passes out through the weight controlled ports ofthe governor into the chamber 48a. From this chamber the air ,passes through a passagewayV 51 formed partly in the cap and partly in the end plate 16, as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and A 2, to the main air inlet passageway 27 formed in the cylinderrbody extension. From this last mentioned passageway the air may pass to both of the cylinder chambers in the well known manner. 'Ihe air is exhausted by way of the main exhaust passageway 28 which has small exhaust openings 28a extending laterally therefrom to the outer side of the cylinder. body extension.
From the above it will be 4seen that the operator, by manipulating the valve lever 40, allows the air ,to pass from the handle to the passageways formed in the base of the handle adjacent the outer end of the cylinder-extension and in the end plate 16 and through v the cap secured to the outer face thereof into the governor which is mounted on I 1. In a fluid pressure tool, a motor having a stationary portion provided with alateral v extension and having acylinderv bore, a spindle having a rotor in` the cylinder bore, a handle secured to said extension and having a fluid passageway extending therethrough, a governor at one end of the spindle and passageways for conducting fluid from the handle to the governor and from the governor back to the said lateral extension.
2. In a fluid pressure tool, a motor having a cylinder body with a cylinder bore and with a lateral extension, a spindle havingA a rotor in the cylinder bore, a governor at one end of the spindle, end members at the ends of the cylinder body and one having a governor chamber, a handle secured to the endof the cylinder'body extension and having a uid passageway, an inlet passageway formed in.
the cylinder body extension, and passage- Ways extending from the handle to the governor chamber and back from the governor chamber to said main inletpassageway of the cylinder .body extension,
3. In a iuid pressure tool, a motor comprising a cylinder body with a cylinder bore and with a lateral extension, a spindle having a rotor in said bore, end members closin the ends of the cylinder body, a handle havmg a y fluid passageway and a controlling valve a main inlet passageway formed in the cylinder body extension, a governor connected with the spindle, a governor chamber formed 1n one of the end members, and passageways and xtending from the valve to the governor and rotated by the motor spindle, then to the glaek to said main inlet passageway.
ernor chamber and back again to the cylinder body extension. In the passage of air in this more or less circuitous manner through'the various parts of the machine from the handle on the cylinder extension to the governor on thaekiotor spindle and back again, there is no ge of air, the passageways being formed largely by coring the parts through which they extend and without in any material respect increasing the bulk of the machine, the features of compac'tness and rigidity as well as lightness belng maintained throughout the design. 'The manner in which the end plates are centralized on the cylinder body is a .factor in theattainment of compacttween the stationary and rotating parts, re-
sulting in Lreduced size and increased power.- -It will loe-seen, therefore, that by the construction described above I havev attained to 'a highc degree the A. results and advantages `enumerated in the early part of the specification, and while I pyefer the construction herein illustrated, changes may be madelwithout departing from the spirit and scope of the Y, invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
a fluid passageway and a controlling valve,
a main inlet passageway formed in the cylinder body extension, a governor connected with the spindle, a governor chamber formed in one of the endmembers, and passageways extending from the valve to the governor and back to said maininlet passageway, all said passageways except the main inlet passageway being formed independently of the cyl- 1n er body.
