LOOM FOR WEAVING CA RPETS AND LIKE TUFTED PI LE FABRICS Filed March 15, 1929 Y 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented May 20, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE i THOMAS WILLIAM HEAD, OF BRIDGNORTH, AND ERNEST JOSEPH PER-RY, OF,
BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND LOOM FOR WEA VIL TG QARPZ ETS ANDLIKE TUFTED PILE FABRICS Application filed March 15', 1929, Serial No. 347,320, and in Great Britain Ju1y.19, 1928.
This invention is for improvements in or relating to looms for weaving Axminster carpets and like tufted pile fabrics, in which looms the coloured yarns for forming the patterns in the fabric are wound on spools so arranged that the yarns from each spool, or from a series of spools placed end to end, are adapted to form one row of pile across the fabric being woven.
In looms of this kind it has been usual, for the purpose of ensuring the coloured tuft yarn threads being presented in their correct order for insert-ion into the fabric, for each thread to be passed through a separate single tube or its equivalent, and for these tubes to be oined together side by side upon a frame, which may comprise an aligned series of sectional frames supported by a foundation frame, in such a manner as to occupy 5 a width equal to the Width of the fabric.
These tube carrier frames are attached at each end to endless carrier chains which are operated to bring the frames into position so that the tuft yarn threads may be inserted as required, and such'attachment has hitherto usually been efi'ected'by means of hooked clip springs or the like operating in association with the end plates of said frames or with fixed clamping jaws projecting therefrom.
The present invention is designed With the object of dispensing with the hooked attachment springs referred to, and of providing alternatively an improved method and means of mounting and locking the tube carrier frames upon the chains, in such a manner as to avoid any possibility of accidental detachment during the ordinary working of the loom.
According to the present invention the tuft yarn tube carrier frame comprises at each end a pivoted clamping jaw operating in association with a fixed jaw on the end plate of the frame under control of a springpressed toggledevice, for the purpose of mounting and locking saidframe upon the endless carrier chains of the loom, the jaws being adapted for release by a reverse pres sure applied to-said toggle, which toggle is preferably located within the end plate of the frame and is adapted for release by lateral pressure applied through an'aperture in said end plate. I The inventionfurther includes an arrangement wherein the fixed jaw provides a mounting for the pivoted jaw and is formed with an attachment plate extension located within the end plate of the frame so as to provide a mountingfor one of the toggle links and also for the controlling spring of the toggle. In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory drawings, upon which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating the present improvements applied by way of example to a sectional tuft-yarn spool and tube carrier frame constructed according to the aforesaid Ernest Joseph Perrys prior Patent 1,718,486, dated June 25, 1929.
Figure Q is an end elevation of Figure 1. Figure 3 is an interior end elevation of the end plate and its toggle and clamping jaw mechanism.
- Figure 4 is a front elevation ofthe same taken in section on the line 4t of Figures 2 and 3.
Figure 5 is a sectional elevation similar to .Figure4 but showing the toggle-controlled clamping jaws in open relation.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the toggle and clamping jaw mechanism in disassembled relation.
1 Figure 7 is a perspective view of a transfer clutch for releasing actuation of the toggle,
In carrying out the invention in the form illustrated, the end plate a of the foundation frame 6, carrying an aligned series of sectional tube and spool carrier frames 0, is apertured at (Z for accommodation of an outwardly projectingfixed clamping jaw c, this fixed jaw 6 being of angular or L formation and. being formed integral with an attachment plate f secured to the innerface of the endplate a by screws 9 or the'like. This fixed jaw e is formed, at its pointofpassage through the aperture cl, with an opposite pair of side bearing lugs h carrying-a fixed pivot pin 2' on which is mounted a pivoted clamp ingjaw 1, arranged in association Withathe g to secure by Letters Patent 1s V V fixed jaw e, the pivoted jawj being of L or 1 channel formation, with its outer lip or flange. normally disposed adjacent the extremity of the fixed jaw e. The pivoted j aw 9' has bifurcatedbearing cheeks k which are complementary toggle link 0 accommodated behind the-attachment plate f and fulcrumed at p in a recess g-therein, the link 0 being retained in position by pressure of a blade spring 1" secured at one end to the attachment plate f by means of a screw 8 or the like, and the spring 1" serving also to normally retain the pair of toggle links m and 0 in their aligned relation, and to thereby normally retain the pivoted clamping jaw j against displacement. I
It will be seen that on the complementary fixed and pivoted clamping jaws e and j being engaged with the endless carrier chaint, as shown particularly in Figure 4:, pressure or impact on either of the jaws will not release the grip, as the spring-pressed toggle device ensures a positive locking engagement until the particular tube carrier frame is brought by the chains into itspredetermined position of disengagement under the action of the usual transferring arms of the loom, this disengagement being effected by means of a transfer clutch u which is carried by the transferring arm and is adapted to press inwardly upon the toggle so as to displace the toggle and the pivoted clamping jawj into the open position shown in Figure 5, the
transferclutch u havingfor this purpose a 7 special pin 1; adapted to pass through an aperture 'w in the plates a and f into contact with the toggle link 0, or the transfer clutch being alternatively adaptedto make contact with a pin or the like provided on' the toggle so as to extend through said aperture '11).
It will be understood that the arrangement and mounting of the clamping jaws and of the cmitrolling toggle in relation to the end plate a of the foundation frame I), or in relation to the end plate of an alternative tube carrier frame of non-sectional form, may be appropriately varied according to the space available or according to other requirements. What we claim as our invention and desire 1. A tuft+yarn tube carrier frame, for. use.
theaws being adapted for release by a reverse pressure applied to said toggle.
. 2. A tuft-yarn tube carrier frame, as specified in claim 1, wherein the toggle device is located within the end plate, and adapted for release by lateral pressure applied through" 7 an aperture in said endplate. 1
3. A tuft-yarn tube carrier frame, as specified in claim 1, wherein the'fixed jaw provides a mounting for the pivoted jaw and is formed with an attachment plate extension located within the end plate so as to provide a mounting for one of the toggle members and also for the controlling spring of the toggle device. 7 V
In wltness whereof we have hereunto set our hands.
