POSTAGE-STAMP AND LABEL STICKER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17,587, dated June 1G, 1857.
Be it known that I, COLEMAN SELLERS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Postage-Stamp and Label Sticker; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in whicl1- Figure lis an end' elevation showing the stamp-sticker in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.

My invention consists in the combination of a box A with a follower B, which follower is attached to the handle E by the rod C passing through the top of the box A. Between the follower B and the top of the box is a spiral spring acting expansively. The box A, which I term the stamp-holder, is open on its bottom or face side and is provided with lips or flanges aa on two opposite sides ofsaid opening. The postage-stamps or labels are held by the elastic pressure of the spring D between these lips or flanges and the follower B. The said follower is made of such a curve as will cause the stamps or labels lo bulge out beyond the face of the box A, and the lips or iianges are beveled on the inside to correspond with the curvature of the follower.
The instru ment having been partially filled with stamps or labels S, having their adhesive Its operation of applying the stamp is as follows: The surface of the article to be stamped-as, for instance, the envelope of a letter--is slightly moistened. The protruding stamp or label being pressed upon the moistcned part by the handle E, the adhesive matter upon the stamp or label will cause it to adhere to the article upon which it has been applied, and upon withdrawing the instrument one label will bepnlled out of the box, leaving the next one exposed ready for use. The loose edges of the stamp are then -pressed down by a second application of the sticker and the operation is complete.
My invention offers many advantages, furnishing, as it does, a convenient receptacle for stamps or labels and a rapid method of applying them. It can be used for stamping letters, labeling goods, and, in fact, is applicable to all cases where labels are used. It is particularly useful in connection with stamps or labels having adhesive matter on their backs; but it can also be used by putting the gum or paste upon the article to be stamped.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the lips or flanges or their equivalents in the label-holder with the follower or its equivalent, for the purposes above specified, when said lips or said follower or their equivalents are made of suoli a form as to cause the stamps or labels to bulge out beyond the face of the stamp-holder, substantially as described.
2. The attachment of the follower or its equivalent with the handle to convey the pressure directly to the stamps or labels, substantially as described.
