This invention is an improvement in fiat bed web printing presses of thetype shown in my Patent No. 988,548, dated April 4, 1911 and application (Case 7589) filed November 14:, 1928,, Ser. No. 319,242. The object of the present invention is to provide such a press with novel means for removing the smut caused by offset from the freshly printed paper upon the second impression cylinder,
or any cylinder thatreceives offset from the 1 perfected side of a freshly-printed web;
In the aforesaid type of presses the im pression cylindersare reciprocated back-and forth over the type beds or printing surfaces to produce impressions upon the web, which is ordinarily led successively between the cylinders and beds, one; side of the web being printed by the first cylinder and bed, and theother side, printed by the second cylinder and bed; The second or perfecting cylinder contacts with the'freshly inked side of the.

[Mypresent-invention provides novel and efficient means for keeping the'surface of the second or-perfecting cylinder clean, by removing the offset ink or smudgetherefrom as hereinafter explained.

Thegeneral construction and arrangement of all the aforesaid parts are well known and fully explained in my aforesaid patent and application and needs no further de-' tailed explanation herein.
' The side of the web printed by the lower cylinder 2 and bed 1 comes into contact with the surface of the upper cylinder2 which rolls upon the freshly printed surface of the web while impressing it upon the forms on tact with the cylinder 2 on both strokes of bed 1, and also while the web is shifted past such cylinder, and ink from the freshly print-- ed web will offset upon and accumulate upon cylinder 2 and would ultimately smudge the web. In order to prevent this smudging I provide novel devices to remove the ink or smutfrom the surface of cylinder 2, as follows.
Attached'to arms 3. on the crossheads 3 and adjacent the cylinder 2? is a transverse shaft or rod 3 upon which are castings 5 which extend toward and above the cylinder 2.
Each casting 5 is provided with a bearing 5 forthe reception of the shaft 6 of a cleaning roll 6, preferably of composition, which is adapted to contact with the surface of' cylinder 2 whenthe latter is off impression (see Fig. 2). i The contact pressure'of roll 6 upon cylinder 2 can be regulated by a stud 5 attached to the crosshead and freely eX- tending'through, a lug 5 on the free end of member 5. Said casting being adjustably positioned by nuts 5 on stud 5 above and below the lug 5. Aspring 5 attached to the casting 5, projects into the slot 5 as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and serves to yieldingly re- ":tain the shaft 6 of the roll in the bearing 5?, but permits the roll to be readily removed and replaced.
A wiper 7 (preferably a roll covered with felt'or other suitable material that will re-' move the smut from the composition roll 6) o is mounted beside roll 6. As shown theshaft 7 of wiper roller 7 is mounted in holders 7" adjustably securedto the member 5 by means of bolts 7 tapped through slots in the holders'7 This enables the roller 7 to be adjusted toor from the roll 6, andcaused to contact therewith with any desired pressure. Suitable means are provided to prevent roller 7 being rotated by frictional contact with the roll 6. A shown 'a screw 7 tapped into the holder 7 engages one of a series of notches 7 in the shaft 7 'ofthe roller 7, and prevents roller 7 turning with the roll 6.
' Roller 7 actsas a wiper for roll 6 and removes the smut and ink therefrom. At intervals, varying according to the accumulation of smut or ink on the roller 7the screw ,7 can be withdrawn and roller 7 partly turned to bring a fresh surface thereof into contact with roll 6, and then screw 7 reengaged with roller 7. Such adjustment of the roller 7 is only necessary when the wiping material at the point of contact with the roll 6 becomes so saturated with ink or smut that it will not properly clean the roll 6. Both roll 6 and roller 7 can be readily removed to permit packing the cylinder 2 and for cleaning.
It should be noted that the roll 6 only contacts with cylinder 2 during the non-impression stroke of the cylinder 2 and while said cylinder is thrown ofi. impression7. This is important because if the roll 6 was in conturn stroke of the cylinder would re-deposit the smut onthe cylinder. Due to the throwing oifand throwing on of cylinder 2 the roll 6 will remove offset ink from the cylinder 2 while the latter is thrown on impression and printing: but when the cylinder 2 is thrown off impression, and not printing (during which time the web is fed past the cylinder without being held tightly thereagainst) the roll 6is out of contact with the cylinder 2 and consequently does not re-deposit ink thereon.
Insome cases, for color printinga narrow web is led between the lower and upper cylinders and beds, as above described, on one side of the press, and then is deflected to the other side of the press and again led a second time successively between the beds and cylinders. In such cases or where the web is led twice between the lower cylinder and Bed the latter may also be'provided with a smut reis thrown off impression.
2. In a machine as set forth in claim 1, said smut removing devlces comprising a roll adapted to contact with the periphery ofthe cylinder when it 'IS thrown ofi impression, and a 'wiper contacting the said roll.

In a web printing press having a bed and atraveling impression cylinder cooperating with the bed, means forv leading a web between the bed and cylinder, and means for throwing the cylinder on and off impression, of smut removing devices adapted to cooperate with said cylinder only while it is thrown off impression. In a machine as set forth in claim 3, said smut removing devices comprising a roll adapted to contact with the periphery of the impression cylinder when it is thrown 01f impression, a relatively fixed wiper roller beside the roll, and means for rotatably adj usting and holding said wiper roller in contact with said roll.
5. In a web printing press having beds and reciprocating cylinders, cross heads for reciprocating the cylinders over the beds, and means whereby the cylinders are thrown 0E impression on one stroke and on impression on the return stroke; of smut removing devices mounted on the cross head and adapted to cooperate with the impression cylinder only when the latter is oil impression.
6. In a web printing press having stationary beds and reciprocating impression cylinders, cross heads for reciprocating the cylinders over the beds, means whereby the cylinders are held off impression on one stroke and held on impression on the return stroke; with smut removing devices mounted on the cross head and adapted to clean the perfecting impression cylinder while the latter is off impression. 7. In a web printing press having stationary beds and reciprocating cylinders, cross heads for reciprocating the cylinders over the beds, and means whereby the cylinders are held off impression on one stroke and on im pression on the return stroke; smut removing device-s comprising a composition roll adapted to contact with the periphery of the impression cylinder when it is thrown ofi impression, a relatively fixed non-rotatable table wiper roller mounted beside the composition roll, and means for rotatably adjusting and holding said wiper roll.
8. In a web printing press having beds and reciprocating cylinders, cross heads for reciprocating the cylinders over the beds and eccentrics for throwing the cylinders on and off impression, a cleaning roll mounted on said cross heads and adapted to contact with the upper impression cylinder when the latter is thrown of? impression, a wiper roller mounted on the cross heads adjacent the composition roll, and means for adjusting the wiper roll relative to the roll.
9. In a web printing press having stationary beds and reciprocating cylinders, cross heads for reciprocating the cylinders over the beds and eccentrics for throwing the cylinders on and off impression; members pivoted on the cross heads, a cleaning roll mounted in said members and adapted to contact with the upper impression cylinder when the latter is thrown off impression, a wiper roller mounted on the members adjacent the cleaning roll, means for adjusting the wiper roll relative to the composition roll, and means preventing rotation of the wiper roller while in contact with the cleaning roll.
