This invention relates to an apparatus for spinning metallic discs adapted for use as the heads of tank structures. In the spinning process a flat metallic disc of circular shape is rotated and at the same time bent to give it an arcuate shape.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the present preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 1 is a plan view, parts being shown in section,
Figure 2 is an end elevation,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line III-III of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a side elevation, and
Figure 5 is a section on the line V-V of Figure 4, parts being removed for clearness.
The preferred form of apparatus illustrated in the drawings comprises a stationary frame or guide on which the motors for actuating the machine and the cooperating elements are mounted. The stationary frame or guide cooperates with a sliding frame to which is secured a rack. 'Ihe stationary guide, the sliding frame, and the rack are curved. The sliding frame forms a part of a yoke on another part of which is a clamp for clamping the disc to be spun.
A spinning wheel is arranged to contact with the outside of the disc and a backing roll is provided to contact with the inner surface of the disc. Both the spinning wheel and the backing roll are revolved so as to spin the disc.
In spinning the disc and making it dish shaped, the spinning and backing rolls are revolved in order to spin the disc7 and the sliding frame is moved relative to the spinning and backing rolls through the rack carried by the: sliding frame, and a pinion actuated by a motor.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, theA apparatus comprises a base 2, on which is mounted a stationary frame or guide 3. The guide has a vertical extending Web 4,. at the top and bottom of which are horizontally extending base portions 5 and 6 respectively. At the outer edges ofv the base portions 5 and. 6 are vertical flanges 5f and o, respectively. rIhe flanges are arcuate and 'form a guide for a sliding frame 8.
The apparatus is made double-sided so that two discs can be operated upon at substantially the same time. The actual spinning of the two discs may not be done at the same time, but whilevone disc is being spun the other disc may be connected to the opposite side of the machine so that it is ready for spinning when the first disc is finished. lThe two sides of the machine are identical so that it will be necessary to describe only one side.
The sliding frame 8 is yoke shaped, as clearly shown in Figure 5. To the inner leg 1() of the yoke is secured a rack 11, which is actuated through a pinion 12, worm wheel 13, and worm 14 from a motor 15. The outer end of the yoke forms a bearing 17 for a vclamp screw 18, which actuates a clamp 19 for securing the disc 20 to the yoke.
rlhe clamp 19A is illustrated in detail in Fig. 1 and comprises the clamping screw 1S which may be rotated by turning the handle V21. rEhe disc 2O is clamped between a cupshaped clamping member 22 and a pin 23 rotatable inra bearing 24 which forms a portion of the yoke 8, A ball-bearing 25 is provided for the clamp so that the cupshaped member 22 and the pin 23 may rotate with the disc while the rest of the clamp remains stationary. y
The disc 20 is rotated by means of a spinning roll 30, which contacts with the outer surface of the disc, and a backing roll 31, which contacts with the inner surface of the disc. Both of these rolls are actuated from a spinning motor 32. The backing roll 31 is secured to a shaft 33 mounted in a bear ing 34. The shaft 33 is rotated through a worm wheel 35 which is rotated by a worm' 36 on the motor shaft 37.
The spinning roll 30 issecured to a shaft 40, supported by a bracket 41, and is rotated through a gear 42 which meshes with a gear 43 secured to the shaft`33. Rotation ofthe motor 32 causes rotation of the spinning. roll 30 and the backing roll 31, thereby rotating. thedisc20.

A machine for spinning dished articles from a metal sheet, comprising deforming means for the sheet adapted to contact with opposite sides thereof and to spin it when they are rotated, a curved sliding frame to which the sheetcan be secured, a stationary guide frame cooperating with the sliding frame and having the same curvature, and a rack on one of the frames cooperating with a driving pinion carried by the other frame for moving the sliding frame along the guide frame relative to the deforming means t-o give the sheet a dished shape. A machine for spinningdished articles from a metal sheet, comprising deforming means for the sheet adapted to contact with opposite sides thereof and to spin it when they are rotated, a curved sliding frame to' which the sheet can be secured, a stationary guide frame cooperating with the sliding frame and having the same curvature, and a rack on the sliding frame cooperating with a driving pinion carried by the stationary frame for moving the sliding frame along the guide frame relative to the deforming means to give the sheet a dished shape.
6. A machine for spinning dished articles from a metal sheet, comprising a curved sliding frame to which the sheet can be secured, a stationary guide frame cooperating with the sliding frame, a spinning roll and a backing roll adapted to contact with opposite surfaces of the sheet, means to rotate said rolls to spin the sheet, and means for moving the sliding frame along the guide frame relative to said rolls in order to give the sheet a dished shape.
7. A machine for spinning dished articles from a metal sheet, comprising a curved sliding frame to which the sheet can be secured, a stationary guide frame cooperating with the sliding frame, a spinning roll and a backing roll adapted to contact with opposite surfaces of the sheet, means to rotate said rolls to spin the sheet, means for moving the sliding frame along the guideI frame relative to said rolls in order to give the sheet a dished shape, and means to vary the pressure of the spinning roll on the sheet.

A machine for spinning dished articles from a metal sheet, comprising a curved sliding frame to which the sheet can be secured, a stationary guide frame cooperating with the sliding frame, a spinning roll and a backing roll adapted to contact with opposite 'surfaces of the sheet, means to rotate said rolls to spin the sheet, means for moving the sliding frame along the guide frame relative to said rolls in order to give the sheet a ldished shape, the spinning roll having its drive shaft mounted in an eccentrically bored sleeve mounted in hearings, and means for rotating the sleeve to vary the pressure of the spinning roll on the sheet.

A machine for spinning dished articles from a metal sheet, comprising a curved sliding frame to which the sheet can be secured, a stationary guide frame cooperating with the sliding frame, a spinning roll and a backing roll adapted to Contact with opposite surfaces of the sheet, means to rotate Said rolls to spin the sheet, means for moving the sliding frame along the guide frame relative to said rolls in order to give the sheet a dished shape, the spinning roll having its drive shaft mounted in an eccentrically bored sleeve mounted in bearings, a worm wheel on the sleeve, and a worm cooperating therewith, whereby the eccentric sleeve may be rotated to vary the pressure of the spinning roll on the sheet;

A machine for spinning dished articles from a metal sheet, comprising a curved sliding frame to which the sheet can be secured, a stationary guide frame cooperating with the sliding frame, a spinning roll and a backing roll adapted to contact with opposite surfaces of the sheet, means to rotate said rolls to spin the sheet, means for moving the sliding frame along the guide frame relative to said rolls in order to give the sheet a dished shape, means to vary the pressure of thel spinning roll on the sheet, and means for adjusting the spinning roll longitudinallyY of its axis of rotation.
