WAGON-JACK.
Peltented A ri14, 1876.

' NPETERS, mom
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH D. MORGAN, OF PLEASANT VIEW, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN WAGON-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent'No. 175,730, dated April 4, 1876; application filed February 5, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH D. MORGAN, of Pleasant View, in the county of Schuyler and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Jacks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referr-nce being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot'-reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing and arranging the several parts of a wa-gon-lit'tin g jack, in the manner hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, Figure l represents a side view of my jack, and Fig. 2 perspectives of two portions of it.
In the annexed figures, A and B- represent two posts, which are erected a short distance apart upon a base, 0. These posts are connected and securely bound to each other by means oltwo metallic braces, D, said braces bein g secured at their ends to the base 0, and then to each of the posts. The post A has a square opening made through and longitudinally of it, in which is placed the lifting-bar E. The
mouth of the vertical opening in post A is provided on each side with metallic plates G G, and these plates have flanges m so formed on them, which serve as guides and protectors of the teeth of a gear-wheel, I. The liftingbar E has secured to it a metallic bar, which is provided with gear-teeth.
I represents a gear-wheel, which is pivoted at its center within the post B, or, rather, in an opening in said post, and is provided with a handle, H, of any suitable length for the power required. The teeth of the wheel I engage with those of the metallic bar on the lifting-bar E, and cause said bar to rise and fall as the handle H is raised or lowered.
J represents a detent, which is secured to the post B, and which can be moved so that it will catch between the teeth of the wheel I, when desired, to station it at any desired point, and thus hold the lifting-bar.
,Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is
1. The posts A and B, constructed substan tially as set forth, arranged upon the base 0,, and secured by the braces D D, in combination with the lifting'bar E and wheel I, with its lever-handle, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The plates G Gr, with their flanges, in combination with the post A, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of January, 1876.
J 0S. 'D. MORGAN.
