DEVICE FOR WAVING HAIR Application filed Decemher'S, 1928. Serial No. 323,906. c
This invention relates to devices of the type that are used for imparting a wavy appearance to ha1r.
It is the general purpose and object of the invention to provide av device of this character whlch 1s simple in construction; whlch may be conveniently operated for the purpose of spective view of a complete device showing 7 the cover and base in closed position; Fig. 2, a plan view of the device, showing the cover and the base in open or hair-receiving position; Fig. 3, a view in sectional side elevation of the device, showing the manner of applying the hair tothe base member "prior to clamping the cover member to the base member and closing the said members; Fig. 1, a transverse sectional view through the device, showing the same in closed position and illustrating the manner in which it operates upon the hair; and Fig. 5, a front elevation of the said device.
The complete device illustrated herein comprises generally a transversely curved base member shaped to provide alternating .U- shaped recesses and inverted U-shaped elevations, with heating means forsaid depres sions and elevations, the said base member having a transversely curved insulated pad by means of which the device may rest upon the head of the user or patron during the waving operation; also a cover member which is de tachably hinged at one edge to a correspond ing edge of the base member and which is provided with rods adapted to enter the depressions on the base member, together with means for adjusting some of the said rods toward the base member, therebyto stretch the hair during the heat treatment. In addition, there are used with the device pads which serve to maintain thehairmoist and protect ating part of the base member, and B, B the Referring to the drawings in which thedevice is illustrated Fig. 1 represents a perthe hair. from injury by the heat applied to the base member.
Describing the parts referred to by refer ence characters, A denotes generally the operpad. The base member A is preferably formed of metal, such as aluminum, having transversely curved downwardly extending end flanges 1, and side flanges 2 Fitted within seats 3 provided in said side and end flanges, is a transver'selycurved bottom plate 4, and secured to this bottom plate is the upper part B of the pad, such upper part being preferably aplate of bakelite, which is separated and supported from the plate 1 by means of insulating'spacers 5. Cemented or otherwise suitably secured tothe under side of the plate 13 is the pad B, Which may be of any suitable fibrous material.
The upper face of the'base member A is provided with aplurality of inverted U- shaped or V-shaped ribs6 with UTshaped depressions 7 provided therebetween. Between each end rib and the upwardly eX- tending side flange 2 adjacent thereto is provided a shallow U- s'haped depression 8.
Secured to one of the side flanges 2 is a handle 9, thesaid handle having a bore therethrough forthe passage of a cord 10 containing electrical conductors 1 1 and 12 which extend into the interior of the member A, where they are connected with a suitable resistance formed into. a heater 13 having portions extending intoithe ribsj6-and beneath the depressions Tand 8. i i
The oppositeflange 2 is 'rovided with a perforated lug 14 at each end thereof, which lugs are adapted. to receive hinge lugs or projections on the cover member, which will now be described. 7 a V The cover member consists of a casing, indicated generally at C, the casing having a top 15, downwardly flaring sides 16, '17, and ends 18 having their loweredges transverse- 1y curved and adapted, when the cover is closed, to engage, or to substantially engage,
the tops of the flanges 1 on the base member. The cover wall 16 is provided with a handle 19 having secured thereto a spring clamp 20 on which is provided at its lower end with a lug therefor, but not shown, at the inner end of piece 27 the handle 9. Projecting from opposite ends of the opposite wall 17 are hinge lugs 22 which are adapted to be inserted into the perforations in the lugs 14.
For convenience of description, the handlecarrying portions of the base and cover will be referred to hereinafter as the front of each of these partsand the oppositeportion or end of each willbe referred to as the rear.
23 denotes a rod whichis mounted'in the lower ends of the walls 18, adjacent to the rear of the cover, and 23 a rod which is mounted in'the lower ends of the walls 18, ad acent to the front of the cover. These rods are sopositioned that, when the cover is applied to the base and closed, the rods will extend above the bottoms of the depressions 8. In addition to the rods 23 and23, rods are provided to enter the U-shaped depressions 7' formed between the ribsG. Two
In practice, the front ends of the cloth and paper pads are slitted so as to accommodate the handle 9 and the spring clamp 20. The device described herein can be used for the production of a Marcel wave and also for the production of a water. wave. W hen a water wave is to be produced, the paper strip 28 and the cloth pad 29 will be omitted.
