lMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,72 1, dated April 4, 1876; application filed February 19, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD P. LYNCH and EDGAR A. WRIGHT, of Davenport. in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Shovel and Beam Connection for Cultivators; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making a part of this specification, and to the sleeve, and E the beam. The sleeve D is made substantially in the ordinary form, and has a slot, 0., for the passage of the bolt O. In the upper or front part of the sleeve we cut out a slot or opening, b, as shown. The sleeves heretofore used have either been made all tight or closed in front, or else open all the way down, at the lower as well as at the upper part, while we simply make a slot or opening, 1), at the upper part. A sleeve all solid in front is objectionable, because when the wood-pin d, which goes in the top hole through the'beam E, breaks, the sleeve turns forward and fills with'dirt, and frequently becomes so packed there that it is difficult to remove the dirt therefrom.- The sleeve that is open all the way up is weak and liable to be bent. We secure by our construction a strong sleeve, as well as a convenient arrangement for removing the dirt that may accumulate there. The slot a in the lower partof the sleeve is made just wide enough to admit the square neck 6 of the bolt, and not large or wide enough to allow the bolt to turn while being screwed up. The head of'the bolt C is made in T-form, and the slot w in the block B, through which it passes, is made irregular or in such form that in some portion thereof it may be turned so as to be removed, while in other portions of the slot the square neck so fits that the bolt will not turn when beingscrewed up.
By this constructionthe bolt may be removed from the block and shovel very readily, and without having to unrivet-and remove the shovel from the block.
The block and bolt thus made may be used on the old style of sleeve, having large and wide opening all the way down.
