UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.
MARTIN GILLESPIE, OF EAST PALESTINE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEGETABLE-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,689, dated April 4, 1876; application filed January 15, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN GrLLEsPIE, of East Palestine, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented. a new and useful Improvement in Cabbage-Cutter, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a rear view of my improved machine, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken through the line a: 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved machine for cutting cabbage, in preparing coleslaw, sour-krout, 850., which shall be so constructed as to cut the cabbage evenly and rapidly, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is the casing of the machine, the upper part of which is made narrow, the lower part wide, and the intermediate parts inclined, as shown in Fig. 2. B is a wheel, placed in the narrow upper part of the casing A, with its journals revolving in bearings in the sides of said casing. In the wheel 13 are formed four, more or less, radial slots, I), in which are secured straight knives G, which are secured in their seats adjustably, so that they may be set out or in, according as the cabbage is to be cut coarser or finer. To one. of the journals of the wheel B is attached a small gearwhee], D, the teeth of which mesh into the teeth of a larger gear-wheel, E, the journals of which revolve in bearings in the side of the case A, and in a bracket attached to saidcase A, To the outer journal of the gearwheel E is attached the crank F, by which the machine is operated. The cabbage to be cut is placed in a spout, G, made in the shape of a halt hopper, and which is pivoted at its lower end to the case A, at the lower end of an opening formed in the upper part of the case A, so that the said hopper may be turned down, should the cabbage become stuck fast, or the wheel B become clogged, as shown in Fig. The upper part a of the front side of the case A is made detachable, and is secured in place by dowel-pins and a button, or other convenient fastening, so that it may be conveniently detached should the machine become clogged.
- In the wide lower part of the case A is placed a drawer, H, to receive the cut cabbage, so that it may be conveniently removed. The hopper G is secured in place, when raised, by a hook, I, and has a brace or stop bar, J, attached to its outer side, to support the said hopper when turned down.
I am aware that a removable hopper has been heretofore employed, and also two interchangeable hoppers, one horizontal and the other oblique; but, so far as I am aware, no one has ever pivoted a s ngle hopper so that it may be used either as a horizontal or oblique self-feeding hopper.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The hopper Gr, pivoted at its lower end to case A in front of an opening in the latter, as and for the purpose specified.
MARTIN GILLESPIE.
