Description
April v29, 1930. F. Gf HARRISON 1,756,592
PULLEY Filed May 19, 1928 Patented pr. 29, 1930 UNITED sTATEs FRANK G. HARRISON, OIE MASSILLON, OHIO, ASSIGNOB TO THE SPUN STEEL COR- PORATION, OF CANTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO PULLEY Application led May 19,
My invention relates to adjustable V-pulleys and the like which may include an in-4 flange at r. suitable angle to the bo y to form the other side of the V-pulley groove, and the outer body being longitudinally adjustable upon the inner body in order to vary the distance between the flanges forming the V-puliey groove, and means for securing the inner and outer bodies and attached flanges in fixed relation with each other after their relative positions have been adjusted as desired.
More particularly my invention relates to adjustable V-pulleys whose inner and -outer bodies are each made by pressingand spinning a blank disk or the like as set forth in the application of Reynold GfNelson, for patent for Spun Metal Manufacture and Prolucts, Serial No.'212,496, filed August 12, 192
The adjusting and securing means set forth in that prior application, have been found to be relatively expensive to manufacture, and the principal objects of the present improvements include the provision of an adjustable V-pulley as aforesaid, includ; ing simple and economical adjusting and securing means.
These and ancillary objects are attained in the present improvements as will be hereinafter set forth in detail and claimed..
A preferred embodiment of the improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation view of an adjustable V-pulley embodying the present `improvements;
Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1 with one of the securing bolts removed;
Fig. 3, a fragmentary sectional view thereof as on line 3-3, Fig. 1;
Fig. 4, a longitudinal axial sectional view of the inner cylindric body and flange dis- 1928. Serial 170,279,110.
assembled from the remaining parts of the pulley; and
Fig. 5, a similar View of the outer cylindric body and flange.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The improved adjustable V pulley indicated generally at 11 in Figs. 1 and 2 includes an inner cylindric body 12 provided at one end with an outwardly flaring peripheral Hange 13 at a fixed angle with the cylindric -body depending on the particular angulation of the V belt with which the pulley is intended to be operated.
The other end of the cylindricbody'12 is preferably closed as by the circular end wall 14 provided with suitable apertures therein by which the pulley may be secured to a suitable hub, not shown.
- An outer cylindric body 16 is slidable on the inner cylindric body and isv provided at its end adjacent the flanged end of the inner cylindric body 12, with an outwardly flaring peripheral flange 17 at an angle to the outer body 16 reverse to that of the'angle of the 75 flange 13 to the inner body12.
The face 18 of the flange 13 opposes the face 19 of the flange 17, andthe faces 18 and 19 form a V groove for the pulley in which a V belt is adapted to ride and turn or be turned by the pulley; and for providing adequate gripping pressure on the sides of the V belt, the distance between the opposed faces of the pulley groove is adjustable by longitudinally sliding the outer cylindric tubular body 16'85 upo'n the inner cylindric cup body 12.
The improved means for securing the inner and outer bodies and their flanges at desired selective positions with respect to each other includes circumferentially s'p'acedy angled 90 slots 20 in the outer cylindric body 16, and circumferentially spaced preferably square angular apertures 21 in the inner cylindric body 12, and bolts 22 each having a head 23 and a shank including a preferably square 95 angular portion 24 adjacent the head and an outer threaded end 25 for receiving the usual nut 26.
The square angular portion 24 of the shank of each bolt ts in one of the square angular apertures 21, and eXtends outwardly through one of the slots With the fiat sides of -the shank fitting the sides of the slot, a suiiiclent distance vto provide a cam guide for the slot,-
but not beyond the outer surface of the outer bod Tlie sides of the square apertures 2l are preferably alined With and register With the sides of the slots 20; and in any event, the flat side portion of the shank which enters the slot Will correspond in Width thereto, so that the fiat sides of the shank may be continuous through the aperture and into the slot.
A Washer 27 is provided for each bolt 22 and preferably includes a tang 28 for eX- tending into the slot 20.
Simple and efficient securing means are thus provided, which are relatively inexpensive, and which do not damage the material of either the inner or outer cylindric bodies.
I claim l. An adjustable pulley and the like including an inner tubular body, an outer tubular body slidable upon the inner body, and means for securing the bodies at any desired position of adjustment withrespect to each other, including an angled slot in one of the bodies, an angular aperture in the other body, and clamping means including a bolt'having a shank provided With an angular portion fitting the angular aperture, and a flat side portion fitting the Width of the slot.
2. An adjustable V pulley and the like" including an inner tubular body, an outer tubular body slidable upon the inner body,
and means for securing the bodies at any desired position of adjustment with respect to each other, including circumferentially spaced angled slots in one of the bodies, and similar circumferentially spaced angular apertures in the other body, and clamping means for each aperture and slot including a bolt having a shank provided With an angular portion fitting tlie'angular aperture and a fiat side portion fitting the Width of the slot.
In testimony that I claim the above, l have I hereunto subscribed my name.
FRANK Gr. HARRISUN.
