facture and to produce a product of, greater durability and applicability than generally obtainable heretofore. In the well known methods ofmanufacture of such boxes and the like, as practicedheretofore it has been the usual practice to paste the adhesive reinforcing strips from the outside upon the connecting edges of the boxes, which proentails difficulties and inconveniences -in many cases, as for instance -in the case offancy and artistic boxes. For
various purposes it is for instance the commonpractice to provide the paperand'cardboard boxes with printed and similar matter or with embossed and decorative or'ornamental portions, in which case the subsequent pasting of the edges by means of applying like tothe corners or outer edges destroys the appearance of the box,
unlessthenature of the connecting strips is very carefully adapted to the character of the printing or ornamentation. This problem, however, presents various difficulties,
and it is obvious that the pasting will not invention to I viously printed boxes to be performed by stick, if for instance a painted box is used.

In the construction disclosed the anvil 1 is composed of a relatively narrow, rigid cenv ter portion 31 and movable lateral portions 32 which by means of pins 33 are guided in inclined slots34 of the center part 31 and the springs 35. The upper surfaces of the parts 31, 32 have a roof-like inclination in such a manner that, when the sections 32 are lowered, their upper surfaces will complement the surface of the section 31 so as to form a continuous angular portions of the parts 32 are provided with anvil surface. Theupper inclined marginal 1 recesses or interruptions 36 forming narrow teeth.
On the part 31 there are rotatably'journaled interengaging lever like toothed segments 37 on pins 37 in cut-outs 32' of parts 32 and extending with their; pins 38 into these parts. (Fig. 1). Upon the parts 32- being moved downwardly by the stamp 40, 41, there will always ensue an even displacement parallel tothe oblique slots 34'as' .on pressureupon either part 32 by oscillatlon of the segments both parts will be positively taken-along. The part 31 is telescopically 40, 41the latter section 41 is guided horizontally, so as to be easily movable along the section 40 and upon the inner terminal head portion of the section 41 a knife blade42 with V-shaped edge is secured. (Fig. 13). A spring 43 forces the part 41 w th the knife 42-against the counter knife'44 (Fig. 11). This knife 44 possesses two spacedly superimposed V- shaped cutting edges 45, 46 and is secured to a slide member 47 which is vertieally displaceable on a guide body 48' fixed in the machine frame 48 and is forced upwards by means of a spring 49. On the pressing die 40, a roller 50 is disposed which upon the descent of the die 39 strikes against a lever 51 which by means of a lever 52 moves the slide 47 with the knife 44 downwards. As the counter knife for the knife edge 46 of the knife 44 a knife 53 (Fig. 12) is se cured to the guide body 48.
On the machineframe 48 there are provided two staggered transport means 54, 55, in the form of rollers 61, 62 and 63, 64 respectively, for the reinforcing strips 56, 57. The rollers are rotated in any well known manner, not shown here, upon starting the machine, until the strips 56, 57 have been advanced between'the anvil and the stamp the distance of the box height, whereby they pass through'the openings 58, 59 of the knives 44 and 53. The strips 56, 57 are gummed, the strip 56 on its lower face and the strip 57 on its upper face. On the strips running through between the rollers 61-64 they are bent thereby into V-shape, and simultaneously they are moistened by the rollers 62 and 64 which dip into the water tanks 65, 66 in such manner that the adhesive matter on the strips is softened and made sticky. On strip 57. the moisture permeates the paper structure and softens the adhesive.
This apparatus operates substantially as follows: The anvil is so adjusted that the box with its inner edge portion mounted thereon is adapted to impinge against the knife 44, if the bottom of the box rests upon the head Surfaces of the anxil sections 32. The position of the anvil herein shown corresponds to the treatment of the largest sizes of pieces of work. If shallower boxes are tobe operated upon, the anvil must be moved inwardly. Since on such displacement the may also beclisplaced. After the boxes 60' have been mounted in position the driving means are operated causing the pasting strips 56. 57 to be first advanced,'and the strip 56 to be disposed above and the strip 57 below within the box. (Figs. 1 and 2.) Thereupon the pressing die 39, 40, 41 is depressed. This causes the knife 42 to cut off the strip 56 which drops upon the edge of the box (Figs. 3 and 4) and upon the further descent of the pressing die 41 its pressing surface places itself upon the outer strip 56 and upon the box 60 and upon the lateral anvil sections 32, whereupon the-roller 50 strikes the lever 51 which-latter causes the descent of the knife 44 by which means the inner strip 56 is likewise cut off which places itself upon the central anvil portion 31 (Figs. 5 and 6). The continued movement of the pressing die 41 with the box 60 and the pasting strip 56 does not take place any more in the vertical .direction, so as to avoid the interior pasting strip 57 being glued to the box in aposition so as to project beyond the box for the, thickness of the knife 44. In view thereof the parts 41. 56. 60, 36 and 32 are now angularly moved to the rear, in which movement the anvil sections 32 are positively and slidingly guided in the slots 34, while the die section 41 provided with an inclined head surface is subsequently forced down in accordance with the inclined surface 61 of the knife 44 (Figs. 7 and 8). In the lowest position corresponding to Fig. 8 the rear edges of the anvil, of the pressing die, of the box and of the two, pasting strips are exactly in the same plane, so that a neat and entirely unobjectionable piece of work in accordance with Fig. 10 is obtained. v
It has already been pointed out that the invention is also applicable to operation with one pasting strip only in which case'only a simple exterior stitching or a simple-interior and cutting means,
being; embraced by the scope and spirit of the claims as hereunto appended;
I claim: 1. In a device of the kind described in combination a three-sectioned lower substantially roof-shaped supporting die for the box, a sectional upper pressing die in alinement with the lower die and terminally an.-
gularly recessed, opposite the other die, cutting means for said dies and means to guide separate strips of reinforcing material in the direction of the dies and between the same for application to different surfaces of the box.
2. In a device of the kind described in combination a pressure die and a sectional supporting die in axial alinement and cooperating therewith and comprising a central upwardly roof-shaped member and two sectional lateral, downwardly inclined spring actuated membersadapted for angular downward movement with relation to the central member and means to guide reinforcing strips of material between said dies and between the sectional lateral members.
.3. In a device of the kind described in combination, a sectional supporting die, comprising relatively longitudinally movable sections, a sectionally longitudinally movable pressure die, means to relatively move said dies axially with relation to each other, cutting means on the longitudinal movable section of the pressure die, a counter knife, adapted to follow the movement of the pressure die adjacent the cutting means thereof, and a relatively stationary knife adjacent the counter knife, means on the pressure die for moving the counter knife, and means to guide reinforcing strips between thedies and into engagement with the knives and cutting means.
4. In a device of the kind described in combination, a. sectional lower supporting die,
comprising relatively longitudinally andangularly movable sections, a sectionally longitudinally movable upper pressure die, means to relatively move said dies axially with relation to each other, angularly recessed cutting means. on the longitudinally movable section of the pressure die, a downwardly angularly' recessed and bevelled counter knife, a relatively stationaryknife adjacent the counter knife, means movable with the pressure die for moving the counter knife, with the pressure die, and means .to guide strips of reinforcing material between the dies and i to engagement with theknives 5. In a device of the kind described, a
lower supporting die and an upper pressure die in axial alignment with the lower die, means to reciprocate one of the dies axially with relation to the other, a longitudinally spring pressed cutting member on the. upper die, and spacedly superimposed cutting tionaryknife, for coaction with said 'cutting means, and means to guide strips of re inforcing material between the dies and into engagement with the knives and cutting members.
6. In a device of the kind described in combination, a lower supporting die and an upper pressure die in axial alignment with the lower die, means to reciprocate the dies with relation to each other, a longitudinally s ring pressed cutting knife on the upper 'e, a' verticallymovable cutting member, adjacent the knife and linked to the upper die,substantially V-shaped superimposed cutting blades on said vertically movable cutting member, a relatively stationary knife coacting withthe lower blade of the cutting means, and. means to guide superimposed strips of reinforcingmaterial between the dies'and into engagement with the cutting. means and blade and with the knife. 7
'7. Ina device of the kind described, an upwardly roof-shaped supporting lower die, lateral, upwardly substantially laterally in-, clined side sections,
the roof shaped upper surface thereof, means to move the lateral sections relatively to said lower die and. in vertical parallelism thereslantinglyguided on said lower die. and adapted to complement with, an upper pressure die, longitudinally movable portion on said upper die, means for longitudinally displacing the upper die, cutting means on thelongitudinally movable portion of the upper die, cou'nter knives adapted for cooperation with the cutting means and means to guide strips of reinforcing material between the dies and into engagement with the cutting means and the counter knives.
8. In a device of the kind described in (mm x bination, a lower supporting die, an upper pressure die, means to reciprocate at least one of said dies in axial alignment with each' other, means to guide spacedly superimposed reinforcing strips into engagement with said dies, cutting means, longitudinally movable with relation to the upper strip and operative- ,ly connected to the upper die and additional the upper die, both cutting means linked to cutting means engageable with the upper strip and adapted to sever the same, and a relatively stationary knife engageable with the lower strip. v
,9. In a device of the kind described in comadapted to engage an additional reinforcing strip.
10.- In a device of the kind described in combination, a lower supporting die, an upper pressure die, and a longitudinally movable part on said latter die, a spring actuated knife on said part, a movable counter-knife adjacent said knife, means to feed a strip of reinforcing material between the knives and means to rearwardly displace the movable section after the severing of said strip.
11. Ina device of the kind described in combination, a supporting die for an article tobe reinforced, a pressure die engageable therewith, a plurality of teeth. In the longitudinal direction of the supporting die and 'disposedthereon, and adapted for the support and adjustment of articles of different sizes, means to guide reinforcing strips transversely'onto said dies and into engagement with saidarticle, and cutting means coacting with the dies and operatively engageable with said strips. r

In a device of the kind described in combination, a supporting die for an article to be reinforced, angularly movable sections on said die, an upper pressure die engageable with the supporting die, a spring-actuatingly, horizontally movable cutting member on the pressure die, an inclined lower terminal portion on the pressure die adapted to cooperate with the angularly movable section on the other die, a counter knife coopcrating with the said cuttingmember and operatively connected to the pressure die and downwardly bevelled, and means to impart a rearward sliding movement to the angularly I movable section of the pressure die and to side surfaces of the corners of a box the-cutting memberon said die. 40
