The principal object of theinvention isthe provision of new and improved devices for raising and lowering the upper section or sash of a window. v
, Another object of the invention is the pro- 1 vision of a new and improved'window operating device that is provided with novel means for attaching it to the window sash whereby the same will be securely and permanently secured thereto. g
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a new and improved window operating device that is simple in construc-. tion, cheap to manufacture, easily attached in position on the window, that is light in weight, eflicient in use and ornamental in appearance.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section of a portion of a window showing the invention in position thereon;

Referring now to the drawings, the reference character 10 designates generally a window comprising an upper glazed sash 11 and a lower glazed sash .12. Each sash is provided with the stiles 13 and upper and lower rails 14 and 15, respectively, see Fig. 1, as is front elevation of the operating 1928. Serial No. 324,077.
usual in such constructions. Since the window is of the usual or any well known construction, it is not thought necessary to furopened from above or below. The latch mem-' ber 16 is provided with the operating handle 18for rotating the same as is usual in such constructions.
The preferred form of window operating deviceis'shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and comprises a single length of wire or rod doubled on itself toform a loop 19 of any suitable construction which constitutes a handle 21 for operating the device. The two end portions of the wires or rods may be and preferably are connected together as by twisting to form the body portion 22. The ends of the wires are each given a right'angle bend as at 23 and 24 and are then return bent to form loops or eyes 25 and 26 through which fastening mea-nssuch as the screws 27 are adapted to pass for securing said loops to the under side of the upper rail 14, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. In order to firmly secure the device to the upper rail 14 the extreme ends of the wires are bent at right angles to the loops 25 and 26 and formed into loops or eyes 270 and 28 which are adapted to be attached to the side of the upper rail 14 as by means of the screws 29.
By providing the attaching eyes at right angles to each other the device will be rigidly and firmly. attached to the rail with little likelihood of its becoming detached. I
It is desirable that the device be so attached that there will be no tendency for the window to twist or bind on raising, or-lowering the same, but that it will operate evenly and smoothly without undue friction during the raising and lowering operation. 1 I
This function is accomplished in the pres ent invention by the divergent end portions of the device. The end portions being sepa rated at their upper ends are attached at widely separated points at each side of the 100 the twisted body portion 22 and the handle portion 21, the wires being separated at this point suiiiciently to receive said loop. The loop is adapted to engage the handle 18 of the window fastener for limiting the downward movement of the upper sash. By means of this arrangement the two sashes will be limited in their overlapping relation, whereby the upper sash may not be lowered nor the lower sash raised beyond a predeterminedamount, thereby preventing unauthorized entry of persons through the window opening.
In Fig. 4 is shown a modified form of construction in which the window operating device is in the form of a bail 32 having its upper end portion bent inwardly as at 33 and then laterally as at 34 and 35 for engaging openings in the outstanding flanges of plates 36, 37 as clearly indicated in said figure.
In Figs. 5 and 6 is shown a further modified form of construction in which the window operating device comprises a single wire or rod 38 having its upper end portion bent laterally as at 39.
. The end of the wire or rod 38 is flattened and tapered as shown at 41 and 4-2. When a device is to be attached to the sash a hole having the diameter of the wire is bored or drilled into the sashand the flattened end 41 is driven into the sash. The laterally extending portions of the flattened end will cut a slot at each side of the hole, but these slots will close up more or less behind the cutting edges of the flattened portion.
A ferrule or thimcle 43 surrounding the bent portion 39 of the rod 38 and having the return bent flange H is adapted to be driven into the hole for fastening the rod in position therein, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing. 7 r
In. Fig. 7 is shown a modified form-of means for attachingthe, operating device to the upper rail of the upper sash. In this form of construction, a plate 45. rigidly attached to the rail l6 as by means ofthe screws 47 is. provided with a central offset portion 48. through whichv the bent, portion 49 of the operating rod 51 extends. The rod may be provided with a shoulder 52 for engaging the plate 4-8 at one side thereof and the end is riveted or headedover as. at 5.3 for rigidly securing the operating rod. in position. j
In this form of construction, the operating and 37, see Fig. 4, and attached in the same manner, is provided which extends laterally from the window rail 55 a sufficient distance to enable the handle member to clear the lower sash, as in Fig. 1. The bracket is provided adjacent its outer end with an opening 57 in which is pivoted the upper bent end of the operating rod 56 in a: manner similar to that shown in Fig. 4:.- I
In all forms of the device the handle and body portion of the device are offset a sufficient distance to clear the lower sash in lowering the upper sash.
It is thought from the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the construction and operation of my device will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and that changes in size, shape, proportion and details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination, a window comprising an upper and lower sash, a fastening device on the adjacent rails of said sashes for locking said sashes together, an operating device, means for attaching said device to the upper rail of said upper sash, said device extending outwardly and downwardly, a handle on the lower end of said device, and means on said device for engaging said fastening device for holding said upper sash in adjusted position.
2. Aclosure operating device comprising a single length of wire doubled on itself to form a handle member, a body portion and an attaching member, said attaching member having vertical and horizontal attaching lips.
3. A window operating device comprising .asingle length of wire doubled on itself to form a loop-shaped handle and twisted to form a body portion, the free ends of said wire each being bent to form two attaching eyes arranged at right angles to each other.
- 4. A window operating device comprising a single length of wire doubled on itself to form a loop-shaped handle and twisted to form a body portionadjacent to said handle, the free ends of said wire extending divergently from said body portion, and each of said ends being bent to form attaching eyes for attaching said device to a window sash.
