Description
This inventionmelatesto a. fastener whi chtling, and this is associated with a latch mem-' ber and dog nation. The specific cohstruction of the invention in its resent form, together with its objects and a vantages, will be more particularly de scribeclin connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating the same.
In the drawing: Figu1e 1 illustrates the fastener as viewed from the outside of the door, the letter b'e ing omtted. Fig. 2 is a view looking from the bottom edge of F ig. 1, showing also the striker plate in a new 'and improved combiand adjacenflportions of the door and door frame.
Fig. 3 is afragmentai'y view of the edge of the door with the fastener mounted therein. Fig. 4 is a view lookin at the edge of the door frme, with the stri er plate and bufl'er monnted thereon.
As indicated in the drawing, the inven;ion 1s esp'ecially adapted for use in connection with the door 5 of an automobile body 6. The la.tch mechanism is mounted within a. housmg 7 formed of sheet metal -with its outer edge portion turned, as al; 8, adjacent the edge of the door and having a nose or dovetail 9 formed integral therewith. On the adjacent door jamb there is secured a, striker plate'l0 formed at its inner end with lateralopposed recesses or pockets 11 in which are mounted buflz'ers 12. These buers are composed of pliable rubber or similar materil and the inner face of each buffer is covered bya metallic shell 13. The-striker plate 10 hase raised portion 14, the bpposite edges of whichform shoulders 01 abutments aclapted to engaged by the metellic feemgs 13,
thereby positivel limiting t he inward movement of the bu ers. The stop 14 is so arranged that, as the door closes, the nose 9 will frictionally engage the facings 13 forcing back the ends of the buffers so that the door will be held firmly withoutrattling. A cover p late 15 is secured over the recesses 11 and cooperates with the stop 14 to retan the bufierswithin the recesses in proper position to receive the nose or dovetail 9. The middle portion of the cover plate 15 is cut away,
as shown at- 16, to ermit the dovetail to enter between the bu ers.
The housing 7 also has an extension 17 behind the dovetail 9 and this extension is traversed by a pivot in 18 on which a lateh member 19 is pivote The outer portion of the latch member 19 terminates in a rounded end 20 which, as the door closes, is adapted to en gage a safety notch 21 fermed in the striker plate 10 and. when the door is ully closed is adapted to engage a second notch 22 formed in theistriker plate. The inner end of the latch membe r 19 is forked a11d carries a pivot pin 23 which engages 2, slot 24 in a slide bar 25 mounted 'n a keeper 26 which is secured to the inner face of the housing 7. Connected to the slide haar 25 is a depending lug 27 which is connecteclto the housing by a spring 28. so arrahged that it Wi]l normally hold the slide bar in retracted.position with the end 20 of the latch member projected.
An upwardlyprojecting lug 29 is also secured to the slide bar 25 and is engageable by a finger 30 secured t0a door handle shank 31 which may be rocked by mems of an outside handle 32 to unlatch the door. The finger 30 has also a notched reinward projection er heel 33 engagea(l;le" by the toe 34 formed on the forward en f a dog 35 which is pivotally nounted on the housing and is accessible from the inside of the cai. This dog, when set in operative position, makes 't impossible to unlatch the door from the outside.
Any suitable meansmay be provided for opetating the dog from the inside of the car.
In the present construction the inside operatinghandle 36 is connected with a spindle 37 1 located beneath the 1"ear end of the slide bar From the foregoing description it Will be seen that I have provided a practical construction, in which the dog and theanti-rattler device are combined in such a manner tha they may be economically n1anufactured and installed as a unit. The assembly 1S very smple and the varous elements are alwaysmaintained in their correct relative positions. It is to be understood, however, that many modifications may be made in the construc tion and arrangement of various details without departingfrom the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In a door astener, the combination with a housing adapted to be attached to the door,
of a Iatch member intermediately pivoted in said housing, a striker plate engageable by 0ne end of said latch member 130 hold the door closed, a member slidably mounted in said housing and having a in and slot connection with the other end 0 said latch member, a spring .acting on the slidable member to retract the sameand to holdt-he latch member normally in engagement With the striker signed my name to this specification.

plate, a rockabl door handle shank having a projecting lug engageable With the slidable member to advance the same and thereby unlatch the d0 or,said lug having a rearwardly and downwardly projecting heel, and a dog hav1ng a toe movable into position to engaga said heel and thereby prevent the unlatchng of the door by the operation of the handle.
2. In a door fastener, the combination with a housmg adapted to beattached to a door, and formed with a nose projecting forwardly ai the edge of the door, of a la;ch I'nember pwqted within the base of the nose and pro- ]ect n outwardly and rearwardly therefiom, a str1 er plate having.an abutment en ageable by the rearw ardly projecting end 0 said latch me mber t0 hold the door closed, means for rockmg said latch membr t0 release the and formed with a nose door, and bufi'ers in advance of said abutment and adapted to receive the end of said nose betweenthem when the door is closed.
