Description

J. c. HEIM FOLDABLE Box I April 22, 1930.
Filed July 13, 1928 WITNESS f A f I i UNH an STATES p JAcoB c. HEIM,` oF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, AssreNon To BROWN BArIiiirsrI fi Patented Apr. 2.2,
- COMPVANY, A. CORIEBATIONOF PENNSYLVANIA POLDABLE Box f Application meaj July i3,
ll/ly. invention relates to foldableboxes, a principal object lbeing to provide ay foldable box which may be constructed from a unitary blank of suitable material, the blank being cut out by a suitable die and the different parts thereof thenfolded into and secure in propery relation to form the completed box. In my improved box vdouble end closures are provided, eachofwhich comprises Wing members which arev inserted Within the box and,
kdue to their design, inter-engagement and inherent resiliency, form efficient seals for the l contents of the box and are not subject to dislodgement infordinaryhandling. v Further-v more, due tothe double end closures and the sturdy construction of my box relatively heavy materials and merchandise may be safely packed therein. l p My invention v*includes all! of the other variousobjects and novel features of design, construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified or described or which Will be apparent from the accompanying drawings invvvhich I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention. c In said drawings, in whichy thejsame numerals designate like parts in the different figures, Fig. l is a plan View of the blank be,- fore the saine is folded up to form thevbox, the
points at Which the blank is scored or Weakened to facilitate the folding'operation being indicated in dot and dash lines and the points at which the blank is cut entirely through bef in@ indicated infull lines; Fig. 2 is a section o tion showing the position of the end closures Y onbthe lines'2-2 of Fig. 4; Fig. 3 is a section on the linesS-#S of Fig. 4; Fig. 4 is a top plan view,'partly broken away, of the folded box and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal fragmentary secat the initial step of their closing.r
The blank may, preferably, be cut from heavy cardboard, paper stock or other suit- Yable material having inherentfresiliency,by a die at a single operation, the preferred form of blank being shown in Fig. lin Which lthe g bottom of the box 'is shown atl, the top .at 2,
one side at 3 and the other Side at 4"Which is. adapted to be secured by staples 5, or stitches,
adhesives or other suitable VVmeans to the lat-` 'eralr extension 6 of the bottom l. End mem- 1922s.YAY vsnat No. 292,530..

The material ofthe blank at each end thereof Vb'etvveen the adjacent closure panels 7 .and 9 is'div'idedvto forma pair of the Wing memlO. The Wing members 8 and 10 part of the blank comprisingthe side 3, top 2l and end members 9 with Wing members 1Q) and side 4 is" folded about the score l2 into a position at rightangles. to `theboyitom yl; the
top 2. is then folded about lthe scorelinto a plane parallel with the bottom 1, .following Which the side 4 is folded downwardlyabouty the score 1 4 into a plane parallel With side `3v and secured by staples tothe flap which"` has been folded upwardly about the score 15l into parallel lre'lationfyvith the side 3, thus.
forming the tubular, Y tion of the box. y c y l In closing theend's of the box thawing rectangular bodypo'rmembers 8 ofthe end members' 7 farefolded I upvvardly'about the scores 16 intopositions substantially at right anglesto the end 7, 7 'y so andthe curved edge portions'll of the Wings 8` are iirstfed'into'the open ends of the box,
the ends 7, 7being slightly vfolded about the scores 18 to permit the insertion of the curved l portions 11 Within'the openV ends as shown in Y85 Fig! 5.] The folding ofy the ends 7, 7 about the scores 18is then proceeded With andthe Wing members 8 are progressively fed into the interior ofthe box until the ends 7'have been.4
brought'into closure position as shown in Fig, 4.] The endmembers 9, 9l With the wing inem#Y bers `10fare then in like manner folded about the scores 19, and 2() into closure position, the ends9, 9 adj acent` between the adjacent cent sides. The ends 7 and Q and the' wing lying against the" outer. face ofthe f end 7 and the wings'l'telescoping Wings Sand the adj al" Amembers' andv l0 preferably 'correspond' to' y the depth j l v they fittightly therein. V Due to the inherent of thebox so that in closed position y the springtension exerted by the Wing members v'8' Aagainst the adj acen'tl Wingfmember 1Q.
In opening the box, the'exterior end closures 9 may be readilywithdravvn fromclosure position by grasping the exposed edges 21 with the fingers.
end closures 7 lare v'positioned Within thev box, l Iprovide aperturesQZfWithin the panels of the inner end closures Within Whicha fmger v may 'be 'inserted to assist in their Withdrawal.
j It' will no-W'be seen that by myinvention I` have provided an improved box `having double end closures which are'securelyV retained againstfaccidental opening; which provide effective seals against the sifting out if o'ffcontents of aV granularor powdery nature;
which may be readily opened and closed With- Y outmutilation of the box, thus permitting its t repeated lrefilling with goods and merchan- 39 dise;"'an d' a box Whichfm'ay be folded from a; blankwith facility.
"lVhile I have herein" described and illustratedvyitli considerable particularity one embodinientof'my invention, I do not thereby ,desire'or intend to in any: manner limity mylseltfspeeiieally thereto'- as the design, oon- .stlruction and arrangement of the various parts be modified if desired from the precise ,form to Which IV have referred Without 40 l'departing from the spirit and scope of the invention` as defined` in the l appended claims. Having thus` described my invention, VI
` claimand ldesire to protect-l by LettersPatent of" United States `4,5 1., A b'oxformedfrorn a,l unitary blank of *i {Qldableumaterial comprising a top,a bottom,
