VWhen employing the usual ingot feeders or hot tops, there is severe danger of break- Y age under expansion, with consequent danger of portions'of the broken Afee'derffalli'ng into the ingot mold and producing an inferior ingot. To prevent such occurrences in caseV thel feeder should crack, it is now customary to wrap suitable wire around said feeder prior l to the pouring operation, but itis the aim of l the present invention to provide a new and ,improved clamp to. surround the feeder, Y which clamp will overcome the necessity ofl using wire or the like and may be quickly and easily applied or released. The drawings'above briefly described illustrate the preferred form of construction and while such construction will be herein specifically explained, variations may be made within the scope of the invention as claimed. y f
B on the drawings denotes the band as'a Whole, said band being formed of any desired number of sectionsS'of any desired shape, according to the shape'J of the ingot feeder F which the band B is toV surround. lIn thel present showing, only two sections S are disclosed and they are yieldably connectedrby a connection C hereinafter described, and` the ends of the band B are releasably connected with eachother by a clamp C whose details ,70 will also be explained. Upon release of the clamp C', the connection C and any other similar connections which the device `may embody if of more than two-section construction, will act as a hinge as will be clear from 1 Fig. 4, permitting outward swinging of the sections S for application to or removal from the feeder F. Upon tightening of the clamp C', the band B is tightly lheld around the. feeder F and upon expansion of the latter incidentV to the pouring operation, portions of said connection C and clamp C vwill expand' 'to any required extent. In case the-feeder F- should crack, the band Brwill tightly hold it in shape and will not permit any portionsV thereof to fall into the ingot mold. In addiltion to performing this function, thefband B limits the insertion of the feeder F into the ingot mold M, by resting upon the upper edge of the latter, and to insure proper positioning of said band upon the feeder, any desired means may be employed. 7. An ingot feeder clamp comprising a band consisting of separate sections and yieldable connecting means between said sections acting alsoas hinge means to allow outward swinging of said' sections, a clamping lever mounted on one end of said band, and
-means on the other end of said band for engagement with said lever to therewith establish a band-tightening quick-relea'sable detachable connection between'the band ends.
