This invention relates to winding devices, To the end of the shaft B of the measuring particularly those adapted to wind tuft yarn spools such as are used on AXminster looms.
The object of this invention is to provide a readily adjustable stop mechanism for use on winding devices for setting frames and similar machines; a stopmechanism which will automatically stop the winding mechanism as soon as the'desired length of yarns (be it the length which will fill the spool, or but a fraction of that length) is wound thereon. This present invention is an improvement over the stop mechanism disclosed in United States Patent No. 1,185,633, issued June 6, 1916, to Charles H. Collins, and which was designed to insure the winding of a definitely fixed amount of yarn upon each spool wound.
The manner in which I have accomplished my object is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which show my improved adjustable automatic stop mechanism as associated with the measuring device disclosed in the above mentioned patent to Collins; Fig.

shaft 14 which is a part of or is secured to the rotary table 15, and is journalled in a bearing block 16 pivotally mounted as at 16to the frame F. The lower end of the shaft 14 is j ournalled in a shiftable bearing 17 which is normally forced toward the shaft B by a spring 18 which will normally hold the worm gear 13 in operative contact with the worm 12.
The top of the table 15 is divided by regularly spaced radial graduations 20 at least a part of which are identified by suitable in .dicia; and on the top of this table is a pin or projection 21 adapted to strike the side of the upper end of the lever 23 which is fulcrumed at 2 1 to the frame F or a suitable bearing secured thereto. The lower end of the lever 23 has a side projecting part 25 adapted to slip under the arm 7 when it is raised to draw the short arm 10 of thebell-crank lever 9 free of the notch 4 in the disk 3 and from contact with the periphery thereof. The lever 23'is controlled by a spring 26 the tendencywhereof is to force the lower end of the lever toward the arm 7 and the projection 25 to slip under it. A stop 27 limits the movement of the lever 23 under the urge of its controlling spring. a i i v The outer or long arm of the bell-crank lever 9 is connected, as by a rod 30, to the stopping mechanism of the spool winder (not shown), and which it is adapted to actuate.
The operation of my adjustable stop mechanism is as follows: v
The devicebeing at rest, force is applied t withdraw the worm gear 13 from engagement with the worm 12 (in opposition to the spring 18), which will free the table or dial a 15 so that it may easily be rotated counter clockwise to withdraw the projection 21 from contact with the upper end of the lever 23 for any desired distance. Thegraduations on the table 15 indicate the amount of yarn,
in feet which will be'laid upon the spool by the spool winder during the time it is being rotated from the set to the kick off position. For instance: in the drawing the table is illustrated as being setat a, which means that four feet of yarn will be wound upon the .spool before the projection 21 will travel to the kick d position andthe zero mark be in front of the pointer 31.
After the table has been rotated backward and set at the desired point the arm 7 is raised until the projection 25 slips thereunder and so holds the arm 10 out of the notch 4 and-away from the periphery of the disk 3; the worm gear is then permitted to return into engagement with'the-worm under the urge of the'spring 18, and the shifting mechanism or clutch of the spool winder actuated to start arm 7 and permit that arm and the bell crank lever carried on the end thereof to drop, the

I claim:
\ 1. An adjustable Seep mechanism for a spool winding'clevice whieh includes a measurin'g roll adapted to contact with the yarns being wound and be rotated thereby, and including: a support, a rotatable disk'with a notch in the periphery thereof; means wherethe rotation of the measuring roll will cause said disk to be rotated; an arm one-end thereof being pivoted to said support; a bell-' crank lever pivoted tothefree end of said arm, one end thereof adapted to enter the notch in said disk the other to be operatively connected to theus'ual starting and stopping mechanism of thespool winder; a rotatable and adjustable table journaled in suitable bearings, said table being provided with indicia and having a projection thereon; a spring controlled double armed lever pivoted to said support, one end adapted to contactwith said projection, the other to be pro A ected beneath said arm when it is raised s'ufiiciently to free the bell'crank from the notch in said disk; andsmeans whereby each revolution of the measuring roll will cause said table to be rotated a certain fractional part of a complete revolution.
2. An adjustable stop mechanism for a spool winding device which includes a measui 'ing roll. adapted to be rotated by the yarn travel, and including: a support, a rotatable disc with a notch in the periphery thereof; means whereby said disk is caused to make one revolution each time the measuring roll makes one; an arm one end thereof being pivoted to said support; a bell-crank lever pivoted to the free end of said arm, one end thereof adapted to enter the notch'in said disk when brought into alignment therewith, the other to be op'erativelyconnected to the usual stopping mechanism of the spool winder; 'a rotatable and adjustable table journaled in suitable bearings, said table being provided with indici'a and having a projection thereon; a spring controlled double armed lever pivoted to said support, one end adapted to contact with said projection, the other to be at times p-rojectedbeneath said pivoted arm under the urge ofits controlling spring; means whereby the starting position of the projection on said table may be changed at will; and means whereby each revolution of the measuring roll will cause said table to be rotated a certain part of one revolution. i
3. An adjustable stop mechanism for a spool winder which includes a measuring roll adapted to contact with the yarns being wound and to be rotated thereby, and including: a support, a rotatable disk with a notch in the periphery thereof; means whereby each rotation of the measuring roll will cause said disk to make one rotation; an arm one end thereof being pivoted to said support; a bell crank lever pivoted to the free end of said arm, one end thereof adapted to enter the notch in said disk by gravity when brought into alignment therewith, the other to be operatively connected to the usual stopping mechanism of the spool winder; a rotatable and adjustable table journaled in suitable bearings, said table being provided with indicia and having a projection" thereon; a springjcontrolled double armed lever pivoted to said support, one end adapted to contact with said projection, the other to be at times projected beneath said pivoted lever and under the urge of its-controlling spring; the top of said table provided with regularly spaced graduations'; an operative-connection between said table and said measuring roll whereby the rotation of s'ai'droll will cause rotativ'e movement of said table; and means whereby said operative connection may be broken at will and the table freed for manual adjustment.
4:. An adjustable stop mechanism for a spool winding device, which includes a measuring roll adapted to be rotated by contact with the yarn being wound, a support, a rotatable disk, means for rotating said disk incident to the rotation of said roll, an arm pivoted on said support, adjustable means for normallyholding said arm in an inactive position and releasing said arm after a predetermined amount of yarn has been unwound, whereupon said arm gravitates to an active position, and means forming a connection between the arm and the starting and stopping mechanism of the spool winder, and actuated by said disk incident to the release of said arm to stop said mechanism.
