` QIGARETTELIGHTER origial Filming. 25, 1927 Y W* Z W Patented Apr. l5, e 1930 PATENT" oFFIcE- JoHN REAL, on STERLING, ILLINoIs cmanmrn LIGHTER Application med August 25, 1927, Serial No. 215,457. Renewed September 6, 1999.
This invention relates to cigarette lighters, and contemplates a novel construction and an arrangement of parts, wherein the cap is mounted for lateral pivotal movements in either direction, the cap carrying material which when brought into contact with a needle creates a spark to ignite a wick surroundin the needle.
he nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a plan view showing the different positions of the cover by dotted lines.
Referring to the drawing in detail 10 indicates the body of the device, which may be constructed from any suitable material and vary in size without departing from the inventive idea. Arranged centrally within the body 10 is a needle 11 which is surrounded by a wick 12, and the latter is saturated with alcohol or the like.
The body 10 is provided with a cap, preferably constructed in -two sections indicated at 14 and 15 respectively, the former being threaded or otherwise sultably secured to the body 10, while the section 15 is pivotally mounted upon the section 14 for lateral swinging movement in either direction. For this purpose the section 15 is provided with a bearing 16 to accommodate a pivoted rod 17, the
ure .2, and the section 15 reposes upon the sectlon 14 surrounding the upper edge 0f the latter mentioned section. In order to swing the section 15, it is -o'nly necessary to raise the latter off the section 14, and the section 15 can then be swung laterally against the influence of the spring 17.
Arranged within the section 14 are s aced pockets 19, and arranged in each poc et is int or other similar material 20 whlch when brought into contact with the needle 11 creates a spark, which is used to ignite the 'wick 12. As the section 15 is swung to its closed position the flame is of course extinguished. By arranging the pockets 19 in the manner illustrated in Figure 3, it is manifest that the section 15 can be swung in either direc-` tion, under whichtcircumstances one or the other of the pockets will traverse the needle 11, bringing the material 2O within said pocket into contacting engagement with the needle for the urpose intended.
If desire the bod 10 of the device may be provided with a c ip 21 so that the device can be conveniently held within the pocket of the user.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of theinvention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood, that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
'IVhat is claimed is:
A cigarette lighter comprising a body portion, a wick arranged therein, a needle projecting above the wick centrally of said body, av cap including a lower section threaded on the upper end of said body, a pivot rod rising from the said lower section and posilatter being carried by the section 14 and exf-tioned within the upper section of the cap, a
tending upwardly within the section 15. Surrounding this pivot -rod is a coil spring 18, one end of whlch is secured to the bearing 16,v while the other end is secured to the pivot rod, the spring normally holding the section 15 of the cover in a closed posltion. The section 14 has its upper edge offset inwardly a slight distance as illustrated in Figbearing carried by the upper section and receiving said rod, whereby the upper section is both slidably and pivotally supported on said rod, said upper section normally receivin the adjacent end of the lower section and a apted to be lifted therefrom for pivotal movement, a coil spring surrounding said rod to maintain the movable section normally in alignment with the fixed lower section,
pockets arran ed within the upper section at oqposite si es of the pivot, and Hint ma- 1 teria arranged in each pocket and adapted to engage the needle to create a spark when the upper section of the cap is swung upon its pivot in either direction.
In testimony whereof aiiix m si ature.
