Description

Patented Apr. 15, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ALFRED CHMIELOWSKI, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE AS- SIGNMENTS, TO SIGMUND KATSCHER, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA PROCESS OF DIRECTLY PRODUCING PHONOGRAM CAR BIEBS SUITABLE TO BE PLAYED OFF N0 Drawing. Application filed July 5, 1928, Serial No. 290,685, and in Austria May 23, 192').
This invention relates to a process of di- I'cctly producing phonogram bases or carriers suitableto be played ofl.
The present invention has for its object to produce with the known talking machines, adapted for plate-shaped, cylindrical or band-shaped sound records, all audible sound l Waves, such as for instance words, music, singing and so forth, and to immediately reproduce the said sound waves as often as desired.
According to the present invention a-plate, cylinder or band consisting of gelatine is used as the carrier or base of the sound curves and the latter are engraved into the surface of the said carrier after the gelatine, preferably at its surface, has been covered with grease or a fatty substance in order to preserve the keenness of the producing needle.
The common sound boxes and guide mechanisms are used when providing thecarrier with sound curves.
After the production is finished the gelatine provided with sound curves is hardened by means of an alcoholic formaldehyde solution, such as a mixture of one part formaldehyde and two parts methyl alcohol, either at once or after some time, in order to increase its resistance against mechanical (reproducing needle), chemical or atmospheric influences.
In order to attain reproduction without extraneous noises, the sound groove now embedded in the surface of the carrier is covered with fat or grease, whereby'the gelatine surfaces (sound curves) laid bare by the producing needle are rendered more smooth by the greasy coating, so that the reproducing needle is guided smoothly.
A single sound box can beused for producing and reproducing, in which event a producing needle (steel needle) and a reproducing needle (glassor sapphire needle) respectively are insertedin the sound box.
By my improved process there can be produced also talking. films with perfect synchronism ifthe soundl. curves are engraved at the border of the perforations into the gelatine of the kinematographic film.
The object of the present invention is to produce an original'which can be played a practically unlimited number of times, where y the known complicated and expensive methods (moulds) are dispensed with and the strip of gelatine, photographic or moving picture film having a sound groove cut at the margin thereof.
I claim- 1. A phonogram record comprising a hardened gelatine layer having a sound groove 'cut therein.
2. A phonogram record comprising a' surface layer of gelatine having a sound groove cut therein.
In testimon whereof I ailix my signature.
A FRED CHMIELOWSKI.
