Description
April 15, 1930. F. s. SCHADE CLIP FOR BOOK BACKS Filed pril 9, 1929 Patented Apr. 15, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FRANK S. SCHADE, 0F HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL BLANK BOOK COMPANY, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHU- our son Book BACKS Application filed April 9, 1929. Serial No. 353,851.
This invention relates to spring clips, but especially has reference to devices of this sort that carry labels and are applied to the edge of a book cover back that has what is known as a tip, which is a thickened part of such edge usually formed by rolling over the material of the cover back at one or both edges at the top or bottom of the back.
The object of the invention is to provide a spring clip which when applied embraces the cover back and is shaped so as to conform over the tip on the inside of said back and likewise to fit the curvature of the outside of the back with the label exposed.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this description Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear of the clip without the label- Figure 2 is a perspective view of the parts of the clip including the label, as they appear prior to assembly- Figure 3 is a perspective View of the assembled clip with label applied- Figure 4 is an elevation of a book back with the clip in position thereon, and
Figure 5 is a section at line 5-5 of Figure 4.
In the detailed descri tion which follows similar numerals of re erence will be used to designate like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
The main body portion of the clip is a skeleton frame 1 made of spring wire bent into any suitable shape, preferably rectangular, with the ends of the wire at the bottom of the frame and bent into spaced upwardly and outwardly curved terminals 2.
The wire at the top 3 of the frame is preferably curved to fit the convexity of the outer surface of the cover back when the book is closed, and the label 4 is creased and wrapped around the frame 1 with the flaps of the label overlapping at the rear of the frame, and when so applied the label cannot accidentally slip upwardly owing to the curvature of the top wire 3.
6 is a tongue having an offset 7 which merges into a portion 8 that is curved to CO1? respond to the terminals 2, and the side edges of this portion are firmly clamped to these terminals, so that it will be clear that the tongue will be normally positioned against the overlapping flaps of the label as shown at Figure 3, and also that when said tongue is moved rearwardly away from said flaps, the resiliency of the wire will, when the tongue is released, restore the tongue to normal position.
This tongue therefore functions to bind the label on the wire frame when the clip is not applied to a book.
The labels bear all sorts of insignia on their faces, dependent on the nature of the business in which the books are used, and old labels may be stripped from the frame and new ones applied with great facility.
In applying the clip to a back cover 9 the tongue is merely forced rearward and the clip pushed in with the back cover embraced between the tongue and the frame, the latter being on the outside face of said back, and when the offset 7 has passed the tip 10 at the edge of the back cover, the tongue will spring against the inner face of the cover so as to hold the clip firmly in position with the frame and label snugly against the outer face of the cover, and the tip 10 will be housed by the curved portion 8.
It will be noted that the spring functions of the tongue 6 are due solely to the resilience of the wire frame and the peculiar manner in which the tongue is shaped and secured to the terminals 2.
What is claimed is 1. A clip for a book back, comprising a spring wire frame of general rectangular shape having its upper end curved to fit the convexity of said back, the ends of the wire being at the bottom of the frame and curved upwardly and outwardly, and a sheet metal clip having its lower end curved inwardly and secured to said ends and adapted to engage the beaded edge of said back.
2. A clip for book backs, comprising a rectangular skeleton frame made of a single piece of spring wire having its ends terminating at the bottom of said frame and curved upwardly and outwardly in spaced relation, and a sheet metal upwardly extendto said 8. A construction as in claim 2 with the addition that the lower end of said tongue is primarily curved to correspond with the curvature of said ends rior to the securing of said 3 ton egiifixedrelatidnfln that 'sfid tdn gieh an whiihinerges into the curved lower end.
