My invention rclatcs to a new and useful improvement in a. latch mechanism adapted )articularly for mounting on doors and other bodies supported swingably on a suitable sup- 5 port.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a latch mechanism whereby the latch may be moved to inoperative or releasing position through the operation of a cam upon lo the pulling outwardly of the operating member.
It is another object of the invention to provide a. latch mechanism of this class whereby the latch mechanism may be moved to inoperl ative or releasing position from either side ot the door with which used, so arranged that the releasing mechanism on one side of the door will not interfere with the operation of the cam operated mechanism at the other side 30 of the door and so that the cam operated mechanism will not prevent the movement of the latching mechanism to inoperative position from the other side.
Another object of the invention is the promt vision of a latch mechanism of this class whereby a retractable. member may be directly withdrawn for moving the latch mechanism to inoperative position.
Another object of the invention is the proift vision of a latch mechanism operable from either side of the door with which used, scarranged and constructed that the operating mechanism at one side of the door may be removed considerably from location f the operating mechanism at the other side.

In the drawings, I have illustrated the invention applied to a door 9 swingably mount ed in relation to the support 10 upon which is mounted the wear plate 11 having the offset portion 12 set into the recess 13 formed in the support 10 and provided with the oii'set portion 14 to serve as an auxiliary engaging portion for the latch bolt lwhich is slidably mounted in a recess 16 formed in the door 9.
Mounted on the door 9 and extending into the recess 16 is a bracket comprising the side walls 17 and 18 connected by the cross bar 19 in which is formed the opening 2O to accommodate the pin or plunger 21 which projects into a recess 22 formed in the latch bolt 15, 65 this plunger 21 being pinned or otherwise secured in the recess or socket 22. As clearly appears from Fig. 1, the latch bolt is cut away to provide the recess 23. Engaging in this recess 23 is a roller 24 mounted on a shaft 70 25 which extends through the side plates 26 and 27, each of these side plates being pivotally mounted at its lower end to the side walls 17 and 18 of the bracket. Carried by the side plates intermediate the ends thereof is a roller 28. Positioned in embracing relation upon the plunger 21is a spiral spring 29. one end of which engages the cross bar 19, and the other end of which engages the socket bearing end of the latch member 15. 80
A passage is formed in the door and projects through the outer face thereof, this passage 30 communicating at its inner end, which is flared, with the recess 16. Extending into the passage 30 is a bushing 31 having a 8 head 32 formed thereon. A handle 33 is provided from 'which the stem 34 projects, this stem extending through the head 32 and passing through the bushing 31 andengaging at its inner end in a socket 35 of a cam boltY 36, this stem 34 being secured in said socket. The cam bolt 36 is cut away as at 37 to provide a recess in which engages the roller 28, the inclined surface of the cam bolt 36 which extends upwardly from the base of the recess 37 serving to operate as a cam.
A screw 38 is provided for retaining the bushing 31 in position. Positioned about the stem 34 and engaging in the bushing 31 is a spiral spring 39 which engages at one end the head 32 and at the other end the outer end of the earn bolt 36.
In operation, after the door has been closed, a movement of the handle 33 into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 will effect a movement of the cam bolt 36 into the position -shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus causing the roller 38 to ride on the inclined surface mentioned and rocking the plates 26 and 27 on their pivots. The roller 24 engaging in the recess 23, will thus move the latch bolt 15 into retracted position shown in dotted lilies in Fig. 1, this movement effecting a compressing of the springs 29 and 39 so that the latch mechanism is released and the door may be swung to open position.
()n the inner side of the door 9 .l have mounted a handle l() at one end ol' which I have pivoted a push member comprising a bell crank 4l normally held iu outwardly7 pressed position by the spring l2, this spring engaging in a housing or cup shaped recess :l formed on the handle 4U. A hook 41 is formed on the roller end of the bell crank l1, this end projecting through a slot I5 formed in the bar 4G. this har being pivotally connected to a bar 4T which is connected by the screw I8 to the latch bolt l5. Thus, by rocking the bell crank 5Il. which may be eit'eeted from the inside of the door 9 by an inward pressure on the bell crank, the bar 46 being moved longitudinally to retract the latch bolt 15 to withdrawn or inoperative position.
Projected into the recess 16 formed in the door 9 is a shaft 49 provided on the inner side of the door 9 with the operating handle 5() whereby this shaft may be rocked at will, the shaft 49 being journaled in the bearing 51 formed on the side wall 18 of the bracket. Fixedly mounted on the lower end of the shaft -19 is a locking finger 52 adapted when moved to inoperative position for projecting into the recess 53 and when moved to oper ative position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 to engage behind the plates 26 and 2T and lock the latch bolt 15 against movement to inoperative position. In this manner I have provided a latch mechanism whereby a pulling may effect through a cam operation the release or movement of the latch mechanism from operative to inoperative position. I have also provided a push mechanism which may be at a distance from the pull member whereby the latch may be released and moved to inoperative position.
Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A latch mechanism of the class described, comprising: a latch bolt slidably mounted; a pull member; a cam on said pull member; and means engageable with said cam for movingsaid latch member to inoperative position upon the outward pulling of said pull member; and a push member on the opposite side of the door with which used. adapted, upon pushing; for movingsaid latch member to inoperative position, said cam en gaging means being arranged to permit the movement of said latch bolt to inoperative position without disturbance of said pull mem ber.
:2. A latch mechanism of the class described, comprising: a slidably mounted latch bolt; a pull member; a cam movable upon outward pulling of said pull member: and a lever engageable by `said cam for moving said latch bolt to inoperative position upon outward pulling of said pull member: and a push member adapted upon pushing. for moving said latch bolt to inoperative position, neither said pull member nor said push member effecting operation of the other.
3. A latch mechanism of the class described, comprising: a latch bolt slidablv mounted; a pull member; a am on said pull member; an engagement member projecting laterally from said latch bolt and engageable with said cam upon movement of said pull member axially, the axial movement of said pull member effecting axial movement of said latch bolt; a guide member; and a pin projecting from one end of said latch bolt and extending through said guide member.
