Description

April 15, 1930. c. G. NELSON ADJUSTABLE FRAME SETTING Filed Jul}, 18. 1928 @Muu w W m atto'z 1401 4 cured to the base.
Patented Apr. 15, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFiscE CHARLES G. NELSON, OF CHICAGO HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ZOURI DRAWN METALS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS ADJUSTABLE FRAME SETTING Application filed July 18, 1928. Serial No. 293,704.
This invention relates to an adjustable frame setting adapted particularly for use in building construction, around door or window openings, to secure the frame members accurately in position.
According to the method of construction now in common use, in setting such frame.
members against the grounds, shims of various thickness are inserted beneath the frame members to make them level or plumb. Such a method takes considerable time and accuracy is difiicult to attain.
The general object of the present invention is to facilitate the setting of these frame members and to make it possible to set them with the greatest accuracy, by the provision of adjustable spacing members of improved construction, through which extend the screws or other elements by which the frame members are secured.
The invention will be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the same in connection with an extruded bronze construction, as commonly used in store fronts and the like.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an isometric view showing a section of a store front with the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the invention and the adjacent portion of the base to which it is connected.
As illustrated in the drawings, the invention is connected with a base 5, which may represent the bottom, side or top of an opening and which may be of steel, iron, terracotta, marble or other masonry. In preparing the base for setting the frame in the opening, a plug 6 is secured therein for receiving a screw 7, by means of which a clip 8 is se- There may be as many of these clips as are necessary, the number depending somewhat upon the size of the opening. Any size or style of clip may be used which has a seat 9 with sufficient depth to receive a screw 10 by means of which a jamb member 11 is secured directly to the clip in spaced relation to the base and at the required distance therefrom.
A flat head or plate 12 constitutes a seat against which the jamb member 11 may rest. A screw threaded shank 13 of comparatively large diameter is integrally or otherwise secured to the head or plate 12 and extends to ward the raised portion 9 of the clip but normally terminates short of the same. A nut 14: bears against the seat 9 and engages the threaded shank 13. The shank 13 is provided with a central bore 15 which is sufficiently large to permit the screw 10 to pass freely therethrough and to engage directly with the seat 9. The screw 10 is formed with a flat head which may be countersunk in the jamb member 11, as shown in Fig. 2.
When the invention is applied to store front construction, as illustrated in Figure 1, clamping members 16 and 17 of extruded bronze, ornamental iron or other material are secured to the jamb member 11 and are adapted to hold a plate of glass 18 between them. A molding 19 may be secured to the outer side of the jamb member 11 to form a suitable finish between the same and the facing block 20 at the edge of the opening.
In using this invention, the clip members 8 are first fastened to the grounds 5, after which the members 12 are placed in position with the nuts 1 1 bearing against the raised portions of the clips and concentric with the screw threaded openings which are adapted to receive the screws 10. The amb members 11 are then placed in position but the screws 10 are not at first fully tightened. After this has been done, the jamb member may be adjusted toward or from the base 5 by turning the nut 1% by means of a wrench. Thus the jam member 11 may be quickly and accurately adjusted so that it will set perfectly level or plumb.
While I have shown and described the invention as associated with a well known specific form of store front construction, it is to be understood that this is merely for thepurpose of illustration, and that the construction of the invention and the manner in which it is used may be considerably varied without any material departure from the scope thereof as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In a building construction having an opening, the combination of a fixed member adj acent the opening, a nut normally bearin against said fixed member, a screw threaded into said nut but normally terminating short of said fixed member, a seat comgi'ising the head of said screw, a jamb mem r resting against said seat, said nut being adjustable to vary the distance between said amb member and said fixed member, and a screw threaded fastening member connecting the jamb member directly to said fixed member and adjustable to secure the jamb member tightly against said seat, said screw having a central bore through whichthefastening.
member freely passes.
2. In .a buildingconstructionhaving an opening, the combination with a fixed member adjacent theopening, of a jambmember, a plate constituting. a seat-0n which said jamb member rests,.said plate having threaded projections withgnuts thereon; bearing against said fixed member, said. nuts being adjustable to varythe distance between. the.
jamb member and. the said. fixed, member, and screw threaded fastening members connectingv the jamb memberdirectly to said fixed member andadjustable to. securefthe jamb member. tightly against said seat, said plate and nuts having openings axially of the latter, withinwhichthe fastening; members have a clearance.
In testimony whereofic I have hereunto signed my name to this specification;
CHARLES: G. NELSON.-
