Description

Apnl 8, 1930. H. B. HAsKlNS RETAINER FOR WINDOW REGULATORS Filed April 18 .llllllll Patented Apr. 8, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEl HOWARD B. nAsxINs, or Torrano, omo,
ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO
THE DURA COMPANY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO RETAINER FOR WINDOW REGULATOR/S Application led April 18,
The invention' relates to retainers for window regulators and one of its objects is to provide a simple non-rattling construction which is compactly arranged to permit decreasing the necessary width of chamber for receiving the window. Other objects of the invention reside in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an interior side elevation of a. portion of a motor vehicle door having applied thereto a retainer embodying my invention;
Figures 2 and 3 are cross sections respectively on the lines 2-2 and 3-3 of Figure 1.
The window regulator retainer illustrated in the present instance operatively connects a pivotal window regulator lifter arm 1 to the window 2, which is vertically movable in the usual guide ways from a position closing the opening in the door to a position within the chamber in the door below the opening. 3 is a sheet met-al channel-shaped clip embracing and secured to the lower edge of the glass forming the window and 4. is a anged retaining member of general L-shape having vertically extending flange 5 and the lateral iange 6, the vertically extending flange being suitably secured to the outer side of the clip as by spot-welding and the lateral flange being spaced below and extending substantially parallel to the base of the chp to provide a guide way extending transversely below the window. 7 is a shouldered pin extending transversely of and rigidly secured as by rivet-ino` to the lifter arm 1, this pin having at its outer end the head 8 forming thevinwardly facing shoulder 9. A 4
For holding the pin from disengagement from the guide way during the normatravel of the lifter arm, the base ofthe clip 3 is made V-shaped to provide the shoulder 10 for engagement with the shoulder 9 upon the pin. The lateral iiange 6 is also provided with the upwardly extending longitudinal bead 11 which reinforces the lateral iange and is positioned inwardly beyond the 1927. serial No. 184,747.
engaged during the normal travel of the lifter arm. l
To engage the pin in the guideway the head 8 is flatted at 11 and the pin 7 is secured to the flifter arm in a position such that when the lifter arm assumes a position outside its normal path of travel the pin may be engaged in the guide way.
For preventing the parts from rattling, I have provided a concavo-convex washer 12 encircling the pin 7 and having its convex side slidably engaging the wedge-shaped base of the clip 3 and the bead 11. I have also provided the coil spring 13 abutting the concave side of the washer and the lifter arm 1 and adapted to yieldably force the lifter arm away from the clip and the retaining member. This coil spring isv collapsible, it being a spiral spring to permit oneconvolution to nest within the other so that the lifter arm may be located in close proximity to the inner side of the clip and as a result permit decreasingthe necessary width of the chamber in the door for receiving the window.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A vdevice for operatively connecting a window to a window regulator lifter element, including la pin secured tothe lifter element, a retaining member secured to and cooperat.
ing with the window to form a guide way for said pin and to normally hold said pin from longitudinal disengagement from the guide way, and a spiral spring for yieldably holding said pin from longitudinal movement relative to the guide way.
2. A device for operatively connecting a window to a window regulator lifter element.' including a pin extending transversely of and secured to the lifter element and having a shoulder at its outer end, a clip at the lower edge of the window, a flanged retaining member secured to and cooperating with said clip vand the lifter element Ato form a gide way for said pin, one of said window to a Window regulator lifter element,
including a pin extending transversely of and secured to the lifter element and having a shoulder at its outer end, aclip embracing and secured to the lower edge of the window, an L-shaped retaining member secured to the clip and having a flange spaced from the base thereof to form a guide way for said pin, one of said members having a shoulder engageable with the shoulder upon said pin, a washer encircling said pin and bearing upon one of said members, and a spiral spring encircling said pin and abutting said Washer and the lifter element to hold the shoulders in engagement.
4. A device for operatively connecting a window to a window regulator lifter element, including a pin extending transversely of and secured to the lifter element and havinga head at its outer end providing a shoulder, a channel-shaped clip secured to and embracing the lower edge of the window, a
flanged retaining member secured to said` clip and having a iange spaced from the base of said clip and formin therewith a guide way for said pin, said ange being formed with a longitudinally extending bead adapted to engage said pin forwardly beyond its head, a concave-convex washer encircling said pin and slidably engaging said clip and anged member, and a spiral spring encircling said pin and abutting the washerand the lifter element to yieldably force the shoulder of said pin head against said clip to prevent rattlin f 5. A devlce for operatively connecting a window to a window regulator lifter arm, including a pin secured to the lifter arm, a retaining member .secured to and cooperating with the window to form a guide way for the pin, said pin having a head engageable with an edge of the uide way during the normal travel of the li ter arm for holding said pin from disengagement from the guide way and said head being flatted to provide for insertion of said pin into the guide wa in an abnormal relative position of the 1i ter arm and window, and means for holding the head of said pin against an edge of the guide Way.
6. A device for operatively connecting a Window to a window regulator element, including a pin secured to the lifter element, a clip embracing and secured to the lower edge of the Window and having an integral dow and having yieldably forcing one of said shoulder form-4 in@ means toward the other.
A device for operatively vconnecting a window to a window regulator element including a pin secured to the lifter element, a clip secured to the lower'edge of the wina V-shaped base, means upon said pin forming shoulders engaging opposite sides of said base, and a coil spring carried by said pin for yieldably forcing one of said shoulder forming means toward the other.
8. A device for operatively connecting a window to a window regulator element, including a pin secured to the lifter element, a clip secured to the lower edge of the window, means upon the end of said pin forming a shoulder engaging one side of said clip, means movable longltudinally of said pin for engaging an opposite side of said clip, means for yieldably forcing the aforesaid means toward each other and against the sides of said clip, and a flanged retaining member secured to said clip for holding said pin from disengagement from said clip.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HOWARD B. HASKINS.
