Description

A. M EHARRY.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
No.175,3 70. Patented March 28,1876.
N. PETERS, IPNOTU-UTMOGHAPNER, WA'SHINGTUN, D C.
Unrran STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ALEXANDER MEHARRY, OITPLEASANT HILL, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND WILLIAM BROWN, 'OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN DRA FT-EQUAUZ ERS,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,370, dated March 28, 1876; application filed July 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MEHARRY, of Pleasant Hill, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draft-Equalizers for Cultivators, 850., of which the following is a, specification Figure l is a top-view of my improved device, shown as applied to the tongue and axle of a double cultivator. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish a draft-equalizer for double cultivators and other places where two or more horses are to be used, and where it is necessary to raise the middle part of the equalizer above the points of draft attachment, to pass over tall plants without injuring them, and over 01)- structions without.being impeded, which will bring the points of draft attachment directly in front of and close to the plows, which will relieve the horses necks from the downward pressure of the tongue, and which will prevent the whiffletrees from dropping down, should the traces slacken or be unhitched.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is the axle, which is bent four times at right angles, or is arched to raise its middle part to pass over tall plants and obstructions. To the center of the upper part ,of the axle A is secured the tongue B. The connection between the axle A and tongue B is strengthened by the inclined braces U, the upper ends of which are attached to the tongue B, and their lower ends are attached to the end parts of the axle A. D is a rope or chain, which passes over a pulley, E, pivoted to the upper or lower side of the tongue B, at or' near its point of attachment to the axle A.
The end parts of the. rope or chain D pass around pulleys F, pivoted tothe axle A, to the plow-beams at or near their forward ends, or to the couplings that connect said plowbeams to the said axle. The ends of the rope or chain 1) are attached to the hook-bars G, with the forward ends of which the whiffletrees H are connected, and which are made of such a length as to prevent either whiffletree from being drawn back against the cultivator wheels.
By this construction the points of draft attachment are close to andlupon a level with the forward ends of the plow-beams, and by adjusting the position of the pulley E with respect to the axle A, the Weight of the tongue may be wholly or partly taken from the horses necks, as may be desired. By this construction, also, the horses will both have to draw the same amount, whether they be exactly abreast or one in advance of the other.
To the tongue B, in line with the whiffletrees H, or the hook-bars G, is pivoted the center of a bar, I, to the ends of which are attached the upper ends of two ropes or chains, J. The lower ends of the ropes or chains J are attached to the whiftletrees H or hook-bars G to prevent the said whiffletrees from dropping to the ground should the traces be slackeued 0r unhitched.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with bent axle A having pulleys F F, and pole B having pulley E, of the centrally-pivoted' bar I and connections I.) G J, arranged as and for the purpose specitied. I: Y
ALEXANDER MEHARRY.
