UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN A. KIMBALL, OF DANVILLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN REVERSIBLE LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175.354, dated March 28, 1876; application filed November 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN A. KIMBALL, of Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Door-Lock, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a horizontal section of my improveddoor-lock on the line a: 00, Fig. 2; and Fig. 2, a side view of the same, with covering-plate detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved mortise or rim lock for doors, &c.-, that may be readily applied and used as a reversible lock, the latch serving also as lock-bolt by a simple mechanism.
The invention consists incombining with a key-holed case and shouldered bolt a doubleacting guard, pivoted centrallyin a recess of bolt, having portions thereotcurved'and provided with projecting teeth, so as to enable the same key to lock the bolt, no matter in which direction it may be turned.
In the drawing, A represents the case of my improved door-lock, which is made of cylindrical or other shape, according as the same is applied as a mortise or rim lock. The case A guides at the interior a sliding bolt or latch, B, that is suitably recessed for applying the different parts, and forced in outward direction by a spiral spring, 0, interposed between a shoulder-plate ot the case and cross-plate of the bolt. The bolt B is carried in backward direction for opening the door by a pinion, a, that engages rack-teeth b at opposite sides of the bolt B. Pinion a is secured by a sleeve, d, with square recess to the square section of d the knob shank. The front part of bolt B is recessed for the purpose of applying thereto a guard or look piece, I), which is pivoted centrally within the recess to the case or shell A, and provided at one end wi h two notches or recesses, forming projecting teeth 6, and at the opposite end with two conveXly-curved parts, 0. The key may be introduced through a key-hole, f, at each side of the case, to engage, whether turned to one side or the other, one of the projecting teeth e, and swing thereby the guard D, with the opposite curved end against a projection or shoulder, g, of the bolt at each side of the recess. locking thereby the latch securely. By turning the key in opposite direction the guard is carried back into position centrally within the bolt, so as torelease the same and allow the opening of the lock. The guard or lock piece is double-acting, as the key may be turned in either di-. rection to throw it against the latch, which serves thus the purpose of bolt and latch combined. The lock is reversible, and may be applied to a door swinging in either direction without changing any one of its parts or altering the application and manipulation of key.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The combination, with key-holed case A and shouldered bolt B g, of the double-acting guard D, pivoted centrally in a recess of bolt, having curved portions 0, and provided with projecting teeth 0, as shown and described, whereby the bolt can be locked by turning the same key in either direction.
- EDWIN A. KIMBALL.
