IMPROVEMENT IN ROCKING-CHAIR FAN ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,317, dated March 28, 1876 application filed June 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, LEWIS A. WINTERS, of Indianapolis, county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Apparatus to be Attached to the Arm of a Rocking-Chair, and operated in connection therewith in such a manner that the motion of the chair causes the apparatus to vibrate and move a fan properly applied.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts required to form an automatic device to operate a fan when attached to the arm of a rocking-chair, of which the following is a description Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved apparatus as attached to the arm of a rocking-chair. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
A represents the clamping-device, which is secured to the chair-arm, one side of which has a binding-screw, I).""Af"the top of the clamp A is an arm, T, which projects upward and at an angle from the clamp. At the top of the arm T is a bearing, H, arranged as shown. In this bearing Works the rocker-shaft J, having the arm G on one end. The shaft J is also provided with holes L, drilled at difierent angles, to receive the handle of the fan K; or there may be an adjustable collar on the shaft J, made to hold the fan K, and secured to the shaft in any desired position by a set-screw. On the arm G is pivoted one end of the connecting-rod or pitmun E, which is prevented from working off by the nut F. The rod E extends downward, and is pivoted to the weight It, as at P. The connecting-rod U is rigidly secured to the weight R, and the other end is pivoted to the downward-projecting arm of the clamp A at O.
The several pieces connected together and attached to a chair-arm, as shown and described, will, when motion is given to the chair, cause the weight R to vibrate on the pivot G. Thepitman E communicates motion to the arm G, causing the rocker-shaft J to partially rotate backward and forward in the bearings H, thus moving the fan K with a motion similar to that given by the hand.
What I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the clamp A, having the extended arm T, the weighted lever U R, pivoted to one arm of the clamp, the pitman E, rock-shaft J G, and fan K, the Whole adapted to be applied to the arm of a chair, and constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
