This invention relates to X-ray apparatus, and more particularly to X-ray centering devices.
The X-ray apparatus now in use usually includes an X-ray confining tube through which the X-rays are projected; and in taking radiographs, which are but shadow pictures, great care must be exercised to place the photographic plate, the object to be taken, and the ray-confining tube in proper relative positions, in order that the desired shadows will be cast upon the plate.
This invention has for its general object the provision of a new and improved centering device whereby the desired arrangement of the plate, object and ray-confining tube may readily and accurately be effected.
Devices of this general type have been proposed heretofore, but they are defective for various reasons of which may be mentioned that the adjustment and subsequent movement thereof out of the path of the X-rays usually, if not unavoidably, produce objectionable movement of the ray-confining tube out of its proper position.
A more specific object of this invention is to provide a centering device freely slidable on and in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ray-confining tube, toward and away from the object; and readily movable out of the pathof the X-rays after the ray-confining tube has been moved into the proper position with respect to the plate and object; without disturbing the desired position of the tube.
Various minorobjects will hereinafter apear.
p In the accompanying drawings, which are illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevation in perspective illustrating one type of X-ray apparatus to which my centering device is applied; Fig. 2, a top plan view of the same; and Fig. 3, a detail sectional view showing the mounting of the centering device on the ray-confining tube. 1
It is to be understood that my invention may be used in connection with X-ray apparatus of various types, and no limitation in this respect is to be inferred.
The X-ray apparatus, indicated generally by the letter X, may be mounted upon ver tically and horizontally adjustable supports of any conventional type, not shown. The X-ray tube of the apparatus is so disposed that rays are projected through the cylindrical ray-confining tube 1 which is provided with a rectangular base flange l slidable into and out of a suitable groove 2 of the apparatus. The photographic plate 3 may be adjustably supported by a suitable supporting frame 4.
The elements just, referred to are well known in the art and I do not claim them per se.
As hereinabove pointed out, it is essential that the ray-confining tube be accurately directed toward the plate 3 and the object 5, in order that the desired shadows will be cast upon the plate. The preferred embodiment of my centering device, whereby the ray-confining tube may be positioned accurately with respect to theobject and plate, will now be described.
The centering device includes a frame member indicated generally at 6 and having a pair of parallel side bars 6 a knob 6 and an arcuate end bar 6. The side bars 6 are slidable in pins 7 diametrically disposed on and rotatably carried by the collar 8, which may be made of two sections clamped in any desired position on the tube 1 by means of bolts 8.

Various uses of the device will occur to those skilled in the art.
The user may slide the frame 6 toward the patient or other object 5 until the knob 6 is in contact with that portion of which a radiograph is desired.
Now the parallel side bars 6* lie in the central horizontal plane of the tube 1, and consequently of the X-rays. And so, the proper vertical adjustmentmay readily be effected by observing the device from the side and moving it until but one of the side bars 6 is visible and is directed toward the vertical center of the plate 3. This position is clearly illustrated by Fig. 1.
The knob 6 lies. in the longitudinal axis of the tube 1, and consequently of the X-rays, and so, to effect the proper horizontal adjustment, the user observes it from above (Fig. 2), and moves it until the knob 6 is directed toward the horizontal center of the plate 3. i
The frame 6 may then be swung out of the path of the X-rays and into the position illustrated by dotted lines 6 of Fig. 1, without disturbing the tube 1.
The radiograph may then be taken and the desired shadows will accurately be cast upon the photographic plate 3. i
The distance between the outer end of the tube 1 and the object will vary under different conditions, and the longitudinally slidable frame 6 will, therefore, be found particularly useful.
And, as suggested above, the collar 8 may bemoved to any desired longitudinal position on the tube 1.
This invention is not limited to the specific embodiments shown, and various changesmay be made without departure from the scope of the following claims.
I claim 1. In X-ray apparatus, the combination with an X-ray confining tube, of a centering device having parallel side bars diametrically disposed on said tube and terminating in a knob centrally disposed with respect to the longitudinal axis of said tube.
2. In X-ray apparatus, the combination with an X-ray confining tube, of a centering device having parallel side bars diametrical- 1y, rotatably, and slidably mounted on said tube, said side bars terminating in an end bar slidableon the lower surface of said tube.
3. In Xray apparatus, the combination with an X-ray confining tube, of a centering device having parallel side bars diametrically disposed on said tube and terminating in a knob centrally disposed with respect to the longitudinal axis of said tube, said device being rotatable on said tube out of the path of the X-rays.
4. In X-ray apparatus, the combination with an X-ray confining tube, of a centering 7 device having parallel side bars diametrically disposed on said tube, one end of said bars terminating in an end bar in contact with the lower surface of said tube, and the other end of said bars terminating in a knob centrally disposed with respect to the longitudinal axis of said tube, said device being slidable on said tube in a direction parallel with having apair of parallel side bars slidable in said pins, said side bars terminating in an end bar slidable on the lower surface of said tube. a
7. In X-ray apparatus, the combination with an X-ray confining tube, of a pair of pins rotatably carried by said tube, and a centering device having a pair of parallel side bars slidable in said pins, and terminating in a knob centrally disposed with respect to the longitudinal axis of said tube.
8. In X-ray apparatus, the combination with an X-ray confining tube, of a pair of pins diametrically disposed on and rotatably carried by said tube, a centering device having a'pair of parallel side bars slidable in said pins one end of said bars terminating in an end bar slidable on the lower surface of said tube, and the other end of said bars terminating in a knob centrally disposed with respect to the longitudinal axis of saidtube.
9. In X-ray apparatus, the combination with an X-ray confining tube, of a collar adjustably mounted on said tube, a pair of pins rotatable in said collar, and a centering device having a pair of parallel side bars slidable in said pins.
